Dear Families,
Please join us as we embrace “The Leader in Me” as a schoolwide initiative this year at W. R. Brown Elementary School. We would like to invite you to read the following book in an effort to increase your knowledge of our new school’s leadership plan.
Establishing a culture of leadership is essential in W.R. Brown’s quest for individual and schoolwide excellence. The staff and students are proud of their school community and we will all benefit from the integration of the 7 habits into our school culture.
“Where does the motivation come from to succeed? From within! That is what The Leader in Me focuses on, developing the leadership potential of all students such that they learn to challenge themselves every day to be strong in the knowledge that whatever they face they have the skills and character to reach their highest potential. The Leader in Me addresses the building of the individual in the service of the community. It also reminds us that as we guide our children to develop the habits of leadership, we sharpen and deepen our commitment our own growth as leaders. The Leader in Me develops people who see potential instead of obstacles. It is what our children deserve and what we called to as the role models for our students.”
Dr. Frampton
“I truly believe that each and every child has the potential to become an extraordinary leader and each child possesses a strength that can be highlighted and shared to impact others in a positive way. The Leader In Me Program provides tools, support, and a plan in which teachers, staff, students and families can easily implement on a daily basis to ensure that we are providing our children with every opportunity for them to grow into a confident, successful leader. Children need more than academic instruction in order to be successful in life. By allowing our school to become a Leader in Me School, we are reaffirming our belief that it is essential to focus on the whole child which encompasses not only academic achievement, but more importantly on the emotional and social well-being of a child.”

The Seven Habits
1.Be Proactive
You're in Charge: I am a responsible person. I take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes, and moods. I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking.
2.Begin with the End in Mind
Have a Plan: I plan ahead and set goals. I do things that have meaning and make a difference. I am an important part of my classroom and contribute to my school’s mission and vision. I look for ways to be a good citizen.
3. Put First Things First
Work First, Then Play: I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I know I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am disciplined and organized.
4. Think Win-Win
Everyone Can Win: I balance courage for getting what I want with consideration for what others want. I make deposits in others’ Emotional Bank Accounts. When conflicts arise, I look for third alternatives.
5.Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Listen Before You Talk: I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings. I try to see things from their viewpoints. I listen to others without interrupting. I am confident in voicing my ideas. I look people in the eyes when talking.
6.Synergize
Together Is Better: I value other people’s strengths and learn from them. I get along well with others, even people who are different than me. I work well in groups. I seek out other people’s ideas to solve problems because I know that by teaming with others we can create better solutions than anyone of us can alone. I am humble.
7.Sharpen the Saw
Balance Feels Best: I take care of my body by eating right, exercising and getting sleep. I spend time with family and friends. I learn in lots of ways and lots of places, not just at school. I find meaningful ways to help others.
Schoolwide Color System:
Please check in your child’s planner each day.
Blue- Hip, Hip Hooray, you’ve found the leader in you today!
Green-Ready to Lead, you’re ready to go. You’re off and away. You are the one that determines your day!
Yellow- Slow Down, take charge of your actions and attitudes. Be proactive and it will lift your mood. Red- Think About it, take a deep breath and get control. Try to balance your mind, body and soul.
Student Point Cards:
Each student receives a point card at the beginning of each month with a chance to receive 20 points. Students earn points for staying on green all week while demonstrating the 7 habits. Students who receive 20 points at the end of each month will participate in their grade level celebration.
Positive Referrals:
Students will have the opportunity to receive a “Positive Referral” anytime throughout the month for displaying leadership skills.Their name will be announced on the intercom and a positive note will be sent home.
Leader of the Week:
Each week, a student from each class will be selected as the student of the week for displaying great leadership skills. Their name will be announced on the intercom and a photo of your child will be placed in the lobby.
Breakfast is available every day to all students at no cost. Lunch may be purchased daily, weekly, or through a pre-payment plan. Students are provided their own personal PIN number used each day for meal service. Please encourage your child to make healthy choices from the selections in the cafeteria. Meal benefit forms are provided at the beginning of the school year.
Snacks:
All snacks served must be checked by the school nurse for allergens. Classroom rewards, snacks and celebrations should reinforce the importance of healthy choices and encourage portion control.
Parent Volunteers:
W. Reily Brown Elementary School encourages parents to become part of their child’s education. Parent volunteers must have completed the volunteer from and be approved by the district, with the exception of classroom parties and celebrations. All parent visitors will need to sign in at the main office when entering the school building. Parents will receive a name tag to wear to indicate they have checked in at the office. Chaperones: All individuals who wish to chaperone must complete the volunteer forms and submit them to the district for approval. Only district approved volunteers may chaperone.
Dismissal:
All car riders are to be dismissed at 3:15 p.m. Bus riders and walkers are dismissed by intercom. Children are to walk to the dismissal areas and exit through the designated doors to the bus platform. Car riders exit from the staff entrance and walkers exit the front of the building.
