York St John
The National Languages Strategy and associated initiatives offer primary schools many exciting new opportunities to extend the range of languages and communities with which the primary school pupil can come into contact. In support of these aims, the Japanese Language Committee (JLC) at the Association for Language Learning (ALL) is delighted to work with the York Outreach Comenius Centre at York St John to deliver a workshop for primary school teachers. The session is free of charge and will be held as part of the Comenius Regional Support Group Programme. The workshop is aimed at:
- Class teachers new to Japanese who are interested in developing a more multilingual and multicultural approach to the primary curriculum; PGCE students.
- Japanese-speaking teachers in the primary and secondary sectors who wish to focus on methodology and techniques for teaching Japanese at primary level.
Sessions will include:
- Overview of Japanese teaching materials and models, ICT-based resources, pupil-centred initiatives, in-service training and support at the primary level (much of which is free!)
- For class teachers:
- Introduction to the Japanese language, with a focus on speaking opportunities during the school day
- Ideas for exploiting web-based materials and other resources
- Examples of cross-curricular opportunities, including links with literacy
- For Japanese-speaking teachers:
- Focus on primary pedagogy, including teaching script
- Exploiting songs and other available resources
- Approaches to curriculum planning
Please note participants have the chance to purchase a CD of resources for teaching Japanese at primary at a small charge (£5,-).
Speakers will include:
Anne Rajakumar, Teacher of Japanese, South Wolds Community School and Japanese tutor for PGCE in Japanese at the University of Nottingham
Rochelle Matthews, Language Advisor, Japan Foundation London Language Centre
The JLC is very grateful for the generous support of the Japan Foundation London Language Centre (JFLLC) and the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation on this event.
The Committee is delighted to be able to offer the workshop free of charge, thanks to the support from York Outreach Comenius Centre at York St John.
