While our area boasts the most millionaires and billionaires per capita, shockingly 1 in 4 residents live in poverty within San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. Many students face an achievement gap that keeps them from succeeding in school, especially children from minority and low-income households. Families struggle to find high quality and affordable childcare. Adults live with chronic diseases that threaten their quality of life.

This imbalance of resources and lack of access to services has a detrimental impact on the overall well-being of our children and health of our communities. Like me, I know you care, and I want you to know that we have a partner. We have someone to stand with us and make a difference. Our partner is the Y.

Throughout the Bay Area, people know the YMCA of Silicon Valley. But, there’s so much more to the Y than one might think. From exercise to education, from volleyball to volunteering, from preschool to preventive health, the Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies – it strengthens community.

This month, the Y launches its2015 Annual Campaign. The campaign helps the Y raise the charitable funds needed to address issues that concern us both. I am personally committed to helping the Y raise these important funds. This year, as part of the campaign, we want people to think of the Y as so much morethan a gym. The Y is a cause – a cause worth investing in.
