LISTEN TO THE TEACHER

From the Math Committee

On Wednesday April 18th, the grade 4, 5 and 6 students took part in the Mathematica Centrum Math Contests:

Grade 4 completed the Byron-Germain contest

Grade 5 completed the Fibonacci contest

Grade 6 completed the Pythagoras contest

The students took a practice test back in March to help them with the types of questions that they would be asked on the actual contest paper.

The contest was designed to challenge and promote the problem solving skills of the students. UNESCO declared that the learning of mathematics through problem resolution activities was the best for a person to develop lasting mathematical skills and on the best ways to prepare students to meet the challenges of the future.

Our grade 7 and 8 students will be participating in the Gauss Math contest on Wednesday May 16th. This contest is similar to the above contests in that the questions challenge the students thinking and problem solving skills. The questions cover all material from the Ontario Math curriculum.

We wish the grade 7 and 8 students good luck.

As a result many students proceeded to the tie breaker round in both the primary and junior division. A special congratulations to Arnav from Ms. Chopra’s class who placed first in the primary division for this region and will be competing in the Ontario Championship Final in Toronto on May 6, 2012.
