6th September 2007 Newsletter No. 27/07

Dear Parents & Friends
of the School

Colds

It appears the season for contracting colds has really set in. A number of staff have been laid low as a result over the past week and also a number of students. If your child has the symptoms, please think about how they may be better off having a day or two at home to help them get over their illness.

Absences

Just a reminder to inform the office if your child is away. This saves Mrs Ferguson phoning you to see why they are not at school and also ensures that all absences are accounted for, which a couple of girls found out about on Tuesday.

Gymnastics

Congratulations to our gymnastics team. The Year 7 and Year 8 girls teams won their competition and the boys team finished second. I wish all teams all the best in the Inter-zone competition on Tuesday.

Production

The production is all done and dusted and a return to normality for all those involved is happening. Well done to all students involved, from the cast right through to the stage crew. A huge thank you to all the teachers who put in their time and effort to ensure that the show went ahead.

The feedback had been great and it was pleasing to see so many turn up to watch on the two evening performances.

Kel Robinson Cup

The Kel Robinson Memorial Cup was awarded last week to Lauren Nummy from Room 12 for being a diligent worker. Congratulations Lauren!

Year 8 Enrolments

A gentle reminder to all Year 8 students parents/caregivers that enrolments at secondary schools have started. It is imperative that you enrol your students for next year as it really helps with their transition from Intermediate School to Secondary School.

Testing for the different schools will be taking place next term - some will come into school to do it, while other schools will be asking students to go to them.

Support Variety -
The Children’s Charity

All Xtra customers around New Zealand will be given the opportunity to vote for their favourite charity – the four charities who receive the most votes will gain $250,000.

Just imaging the difference $250,000 could make in the lives of children in need.

Waterpolo

Last Friday night our opponents were Rangeview Grey. This was
a fantastic evening with an outstanding display of teamwork throughout the game by all of our players. Due to this, they were able to enjoy a 11-2 victory over Rangeview.

The results by quarter were:
1st: 3-0, 2nd: 7-0, 3rd: 10-1, 4th: 11-2.

The goal scorers were:

Ruby Dragicevich – 3; Holly Rayner and Miro Harre – 2 each; Niko Lilo, Sahrenah Mullin, Stephanie Kyle and Shaun Boag – 1 each.

A superb effort by all. Well done!

Special thanks again to Emily Ingoe for her inspirational coaching.

● INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL YOUTH EXCHANGE

International Cultural Youth Exchange, or ICYE as it is commonly referred to are involved with bringing into New Zealand, volunteers from a large number of countries to do voluntary work in New Zealand and experience the New Zealand culture.

While these young people, aged between 18 and 25 are in New Zealand, they are placed in several areas such as farming, environment care, horticulture, health camps, children’s homes, school placements, homes for the disabled and a varying range of social placements.

We are always looking for hosting placements that would be interested in giving these exchangees an opportunity to help out in these areas in exchange for board and meals. ICYE NZ pays the volunteers a monthly allowance while they are in New Zealand.

We have a large number of volunteers coming to New Zealand in January 2008 and their area of interest is assisting in schools, mainly in the area of teaching foreign languages, special needs teaching, sports and generally helping out at school. If you feel that you would be interest in having a foreign volunteer assist in your school programme, then please do not hesitate to contact me.

Furthermore, if you would like to know more about our programme, please contact me either by email or by telephone 07 572 0901.
