7 July 2014

Dear Parent/Guardian

The end of yet another school year on Friday 18 July 2014 is rapidly approaching. I am writing to you to tell you about the arrangements for the end of term and to remind pupils about the beginning of the next academic year.

This has been another outstanding academic year at UCC. The overall quality of teaching and learning has never been higher; attendance and punctuality are at record levels; performance in examinations this summer will once again surpass our previous best; the quality of our Creative Arts, dance, music, drama and art are outstanding; our cheerleaders are National Champions; our sports teams, racing car and show-jumping teams continue to impress and we see continued great progress in many other aspects of our work.

School shop

Last year, as a service to our pupils and parents, we opened a school shop selling uniform, dictionaries, maths equipment, revision guides, etc. Our policy is to keep prices as low as possible to ensure all of our students can enjoy their lives at UCC by being properly equipped to participate in their learning. During the summer holidays the shop will be open:

·  Every Friday: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (except Friday 1 August; the shop will instead open on Thursday 31 July, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

·  Monday 1 September: 1.30 p.m. to 3.30 p.m.

·  Tuesday 2 September: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

During normal term time the shop will open daily as follows:

·  8.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m.

·  12.35 p.m. to 1.35 p.m. (Tuesdays and Wednesdays only)

·  3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Thursday 10 July 2014

I have been informed by representatives of the NUT that their members are to be called out on strike on 10 July 2014. We have looked carefully at the teaching requirements on that day and have concluded that the school should remain open to all students and timetabled lessons and routines will continue as normal.

Last day of term: Friday 18 July 2014

School will close at the usual time of 3.40 p.m. on Friday 18 July 2014.

The following staff will leave UCC at the end of this term:

Uniform

Having just enjoyed a couple of weeks of summer weather during which normal uniform standards were inevitably stretched, I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents of the school’s uniform regulations. In particular, I draw your attention to the requirements that girls’ skirts should be of ‘reasonable length and style’:

·  Black blazer with Ullswater Community College badge (blazers and badges are available from the school shop, Sam Scotts and Lakeland Embroidery in Penrith)

·  College tie (clip on)

·  A plain grey or white shirt with long or short sleeves and of a style designed to be worn with a tie; the shirt must be tucked in

·  A plain dark grey or black V-necked, sleeved or sleeveless pullover or cardigan (crew-neck pullovers or cardigans are not permitted)

·  A plain, outdoor garment (tracksuit tops, hoodies and denim jackets are not permitted and should not be brought into school); this garment must not be worn in tutor time, assemblies, lessons or in the dining halls

·  Plain black trousers (not tracksuit bottoms or jeans) or

·  Plain black skirt of reasonable length and style

·  Plain black leather shoes with low heel (not trainers)

·  Plain black or grey socks, black or grey tights.

Extremes of hair styling or colouring are not permitted. Excessive make-up is not allowed in College. No hats or hoods to be worn inside any building. Jewellery is limited to one small earring or stud per ear. Health and Safety laws require students to remove jewellery for practical lessons, e.g. PE or technology. Facial or body piercing is not permitted on the grounds of safety. Any belts worn must be slim, of a dark colour and without a large buckle.

Results days

A-level results day is Thursday 14 August (8.00 a.m. for Year 13; 9.30 a.m. for Year 12) and GCSE results day is Thursday 21 August (10.00 a.m.). Look out in the local press for more excellent news from UCC over the summer.

Finally, at the end of my fifth year at UCC, I would like to thank all of the pupils, parents and staff for their support, hard work and commitment to the progress of the school and to wish you all a very relaxing summer holiday. For pupils, the next academic year starts on Wednesday 3rd September 2014.

Yours sincerely

N. H. Pattinson BSc, ADCE
