Dear North Central 2013 Chapter Presidents & State Council Directors:

Congratulations! Welcome to the network of more than 590 SHRM chapter presidents who work hard to serve HR professionals and to advance the HR profession in their communities. We wanted to provide you some important information you will need in the coming weeks and months. It will be useful whether you are new to your volunteer role or are returning for another year. Please read this information carefully and save it for future reference.

During your term as president, you are responsible for the operations and the overall success of your chapter and you are the central contact for your chapter. You will receive a variety of resources and materials from SHRM and the state council, mostly via e-mail. Please share the information with your chapter leaders as requested and be responsive to requests. Make sure that SHRM.org emails are not blocked thru your company’s spam filter.

A great way to get started if you are new to your role is to listen to a recorded webinar that is located on the Volunteer Leader Resources Center (VLRC) regarding your role as a Chapter President Also, attached you will find plenty of resources that will further guide you, including a link to an activities calendar. There is a wealth of information on the VLRC for you to access. Chapter presidents will also receive an invitation to participate in SHRM hosted chapter president webinars based on chapter size. This is a great opportunity to hear from your peers across the country. Every month, we send out a SHRM Update with timely information and reminders of upcoming calls/webinars and deadlines. The monthly SHRM Update will be forwarded to you from your State Council Director. You will then send out the SHRM Update to your chapter board members and include chapter updates.

Please utilize your SHRM Regional Team. It’s our responsibility to assist you with leading your chapter. Field Services Directors (FSDs), Nancy and Martha cover different states (see attached) and can assist with a variety of needs such as questions regarding membership, bylaws, strategic planning, dealing with volunteers or any other questions or issues you may be dealing with. Kristine, our Regional Administrator (RA) covers all of the states. She is located at SHRM headquarters and can help you with questions you may have, such as identifying SHRM marketing materials for your membership campaign, providing at-large lists for marketing, and supplying you with information about your chapter’s member roster.

Your State Council Director is also available to help you with any questions. We recommend you touch base with them to insure all state council dates are on your calendar, such as state council meetings/calls, state leadership conference, annual state conference, and any other significant events in your state. As a chapter president, you are an automatic voting member of your state council and should attend all state council meetings or send a representative. Some states also have District Directors so make sure you ask your State Council Director who that person will be.

As you can see, there are many resources available to help you be successful in your new leadership role. You are not alone! Make sure you reach out when you need us – we are here to help you! Again, congratulations and welcome! We look forward to working with you this year.
