Dear New Tizard Resident
Double congratulations – firstly for achieving your well earned exam grades but also for being allocated a place in the best Hall of Residence at Imperial College! The Wardening team will be living alongside you for the next year – our job is to make sure you have an enjoyable time and get the most out of staying in Halls. We will all be around on move-in day to meet you but for now we will try toprovide some useful information about moving in and your stay.
The Wardening Team at Tizard has a Warden (Martyn) and three Sub Wardens (Alex, Kirsten and Kirsty). Martyn is a Lecturer in Materials and the others are PhD students Alex (Maths), Kirsten (Life Sciences) and Kirsty (Physics). Our primary role is to provide support and advice with any issues that you encounter in coming to study and live at Imperial. There are also six Hall Seniors who are returning undergraduate students who live in Halls and assist the Wardening team with organizing events and day-to-day running of the hall.
About the hall (
Tizard Hall is located on the south side of Princes Gardens, next to Exhibition Road on the South Kensington Campus. It is one of three Halls known collectively as ‘Southside’. The Hall is conveniently located opposite Ethos, the Imperial College sports facility and both the Student Union and the majority of other Imperial College halls are within easy walking distance. The study bedrooms all have en suite bathroom facilities and individual internet and telephone access. There are large communal kitchens with space available for every student to store their cooking equipment and food, plus a coin-operated laundry in the basement. Please take note that all Imperial College residences are non-smoking.
Arrival Day
You should aim to arrive between 9 am and 4 pm on Saturday 4th Octoberwhen we are available to hand over your keys and show you your room. If you are unable to arrive at this time it is extremely important that you contact us in advance. To contact us please telephone or email us, our contact details are at the top of this letter. Those of you arriving early for welcome and orientation events will be sent details separately.
For those arriving by car
On the day, there will be marshals directing you around Princes Gardens and the Halls will be signposted from the major roads nearby. You should be aware that parking outside the hall is very limited, and closely patrolled by Westminster Council! As such, you will only be able to park your car to unload (up to 15 min). You will however be issued a parking voucher that will enable you to park on the main campus for up to 2 hours after unloading.
For those arriving on public transport
South Kensington station (Piccadilly, Circle and District lines) is within a 5-10 minute walk, if necessary a taxi ride from the station will cost around £ 5. The map below shows the local area, the station and Tizard Hall.
Things to bring
Don’t forget to bring bedding and cooking equipment, as the Hall does not provide these. We want Tizard to feel like home for the year and you are welcome to bring any items that make you comfortable, but please remember that space is limited! We do not recommend bringing a car, as parking in the area is tightly regulated and extremely expensive. Although cycling is a good way to get around London, please be aware that bikes must be stored in the designated area in our basement, not in study bedrooms. It is your responsibility to arrange insurance for bikes or any other high-value items you may bring along.A full list of recommended items and details of the insurance cover provided by College can be found here:
There is a large screen TV in the hall common room (with DVD player and PS3) and the communal kitchens also contain TVs.
Finally, you may want to bring something smart to wear to formal dinners held by the Hall and other clubs & societies you may join.
Your new contact details
Your postal address will be (your name), (your room number), Tizard Hall, Watts Way, Princes Gardens, London, SW7 1BJ. Please do not arrange to have anything sent to this address until after your tenancy starts. Your telephone number will be allocated on arrival.
Events & Orientation
We have an amazing schedule of events planned for the first two weeks of term and more throughout the year. In the first couple of weeks we strongly encourage everyone to attend as many events as possible – they are a great way of meeting other people in the Hall and making new friends. In addition we will have larger events including a formal dinner during the first term and a day trip abroad to Bruges in Belgium.
We are looking forward to your arrival and hope that you will spend a happy year with us at Tizard Hall.
Yours sincerely
Martyn McLachlan
