Men’s 6th XI
Letchworth V 4-2 Hertford IV
Scorers: Kash Govindaswamy, Ian Rawlinson
Hertford failed to learn their lessons from the previous two weeks effectively starting to play proper hockey only after 10 minutes had gone by which time they were 2 goals down. Letchworth, fielding a strong side, started by far the better, using their fast running wingers and mid field to break through into the Hertford D and scoring two well struck goals from open play.
As often with this side, heads stayed high and far from feeling outplayed, the midfield started to both work back to help the defence and then find space when we had possession.John Andrewssolid in defence clearedoff the line at one point andNick Izzardstopping a number of good shots through the game. The introduction of Kash after 12 minutes started to cause problems for Letchworth as he andChris Deanpushed forward. Reward came with the award of a penalty corner neatly slipped by Daryl into Kash's path who made no mistake with a hammering strike into the corner of the backboards.
A few tweaks at halftime and good work rate from Daryl and Dave Harding in midfield saw Hertford maintain a competitive presence on the field. Letchworth were still working hard too and were unlucky not to score from a messy penalty corner with stand in captain Graham clearing off the line as the ball was struck firmly through a sea of players. Unluckily though, Letchworth's next attack saw a lifted shot well saved by Nick but only to fall onto the stick of a Letchworth forward to push into goal.
Still undeterred Hertford quickly cut the difference back to one goal scoring a second from a penalty corner,Ian Rawlinsonfinding the net from a loose ball in front of goal. As Hertford continued to push forward to equalise, the champagne moment of the game (and possibly the 6's season) came but alas it was Letchworth producing it. A skilful and well directed aerial ball from a free hit was taken by their young forward just outside the top of the D, he controlled superbly taking the ball into the D with his second touch and with his third the 13 year old left the Hertford keeper no chance with his shot. It was great to see the Hertford team joining the spontaneous applause even though that sealed their fate for the game.
Man of the Match goes to Kash for his presence up front as well as his well taken goal.

YOUTH
U10 Boys
Herts League – Bishops Stortford
The Boys made the trip to Hockerill School to compete in the latest North Essex League Competition with 2 sides, a B Team in the U10’s tournament and the A Team making the step up to the U12 competition
The B team rode their luck in the first game with Saffron Walden and won 1-0, and then was followed by a comfortable 2-0win against Malden. In the second round of matches against the same two team, they lost a much more even game then previously with Saffron Walden 3-0, and finished off with a 4-1 against Malden (first goal for Mark Bateman) to win the group.
The A team started their first U12 game, with a game against Maldon (previously unbeaten this season) and gained a very creditable 1-1 draw. They followed this with a disappointing 4-0 loss to a decent Saffron Walden Side and finish the tournament with a deserved 1-0 win against Bishops Stortford to finish second in the group.
An excellent performance from all the boys involved with some exceptional work rate
Team A: Jack Bentley, David James, Jamie Ker, Jasper Skillett, Peter Sharman, Charlie Walker, Isaac Oldham and Zac Henderson-Lea
Team B: Elliot Mari, Jamie Ker, Toby and Mark Bateman, Zac Henderson-Lea, Joshua Wilson, Jo Hopper, James Willoughby
U14 Girls
Hertford 2-1 Old Loughtonians (EH U14 Girls Championship)
Scorers: Niamh Hartnett, Emily Rollins
Sitting 2nd in the league table before the match, Hertford U14 girls knew that a draw would put them through to the England Hockey Regional Championship Finals, but the result was required against Old Loughtonians who sat top of the table having dropped no points this season. It was clear from the start that every Hertford player would give their all, chasing down balls and providing no time for Old Loughts to settle. Within minutes, “player of the match”Niamh Hartnettwas consistently pouncing on loose balls and pressurising the opposition’s defence. Whilst the game remained tense, Hertford had the upper hand and after 17minutes, some great inter-play down Hertford’s right hand side foundMolly Hobsonin the D who crossed for Hartnett to slot home.
With the Sccoreline 1-0 at half time Hertford knew that Old Loughts would come out fighting and the first ten minutes saw some great end to end hockey only to be broken by an individual piece of skilful counter-attack from Old Loughts who equalised after 42mins, bringing the match to a climax. Pleasingly, Hertford didn’t let their heads drop and Hobson, after powering past her marker, saw some space open up in front of her. Driving down the pitch she cleanly reverse crossed the ball from the base line which found a perfectly timed run fromEmily Rollinsto the right hand post who deftly slotted home to put the hosts ahead again.
The last ten minutes felt like an eternity for the home supporters as Hertford’s defence were put under increasing pressure. However, the back four remained strong, intercepting and distributing the ball with great skill and calmness to the mid-field, who continued to run their legs into the ground. Amazing teamwork clearly was the success of the day, and it was a delight to watch the girls work so hard for each other….. Regionals, here we come!!
