While most nursing parents hope to produce enough milk to meet their babies’ needs, sometimes it just isn’t possible.For a variety of reasonsincluding adifficult start with breastfeeding,breast/chest surgery, insufficient glandular tissue, adoption, surrogacy, and LGBTQ non-gestational breastfeeding, supplementationmay benecessary either temporarily orfor the duration of breastfeeding.While most parents assume supplementation means bottle-feeding,as lactation professionals we can educate the parents we work with aboutadditional options. We can educate parents about at-breast supplementation, finger-feeding, and bottle-feeding techniques that support breastfeeding so that they can select a supplementation tool that supports their needs, their babies’ needs and overall breastfeeding success.

OBJECTIVES:

Following the webcast teleconference, participants will be able to:

1.  Identify reasons why nursing parent may need to supplement breastfeeding

2.  Guide parents on how much to supplement

3.  Identify various options of what parents may be supplementing with

4.  Support parents to supplement their milk production using an at-breast supplementer

5.  Support parents to supplement their milk production using a finger-feeder

6.  Support parents to supplement their milk production using bottle-feeding techniques that support breastfeeding

Beginning in July 2016, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (SIU) is providing continuing education credit for various disciplines including contact hours for Registered Nurses, Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Hours for Registered Dietitians, CERPS for IBCLCs and attendance credit for all other professions. The amount of credit for each webcast varies based on the length of the presentation.

After the webcast, CHTC staff will provide your information and type of continuing education credit requested to SIU. Within seven days, you will receive an email from SIU requesting that you create a profile on their website using either IE10 or newer, Google Chrome or Firefox. After your profile is created, you will be given access to the quiz and will have three attempts to pass. Once the quiz is passed, you will be able to print a continuing education certificate.

Application for CERPs has been submitted to the International Board of Lactation Examiners.Application for contact hours for RNs has been submitted. Application for CPEs for RDs has been submitted. This webcast meets a portion of the hourly requirement for CLC/CLS recertification.

ALL participants must register to receive the webcast link and print a certificate. This webcast may be viewed and the evaluation completed by September 5, 2018 for continuing education credit for RN, RD, LDN, IBCLC (CLC or CLS).

Meet The Speaker…

Alyssa Schnell, MS, IBCLC


Alyssa has been helping parents and babies with breastfeeding for the past 14 years and she has been accredited as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) since 2009. Her private practice, Sweet Pea Breastfeeding Support, provides individual lactation consultations either in person or by phone for parents around the country. Alyssa is also the co-host of the Breastfeeding Outside the Box podcast geared towards families breastfeeding in extraordinary situations. Alyssa enjoys working with all parents and babies, but she has an extra special place in her heart for helping families through adoption and surrogacy to breastfeed their babies. She is the author of Breastfeeding Without Birthing: A Breastfeeding Guide for Mothers Through Adoption, Surrogacy, and Other Special Circumstances. Alyssa is the proud mother of three breastfed children, two by birth and one by adoption.

At the CHTC web site, http://www.springfieldul.org/page.aspx?item=10, you will find information about how to register for classes, future training schedules, and materials for webcast presentations. To access the webcast materials, click “Distance Learning” found near the top of the home page. The “Distance Learning” page will appear with information pertaining to the next webcast found under “Next Event.” All of the handouts for the upcoming webcast are available.

Information, including handouts, for previous webcasts and satellite presentations, can be accessed by selecting the “Past Satellite Teleconference Handouts and Videos’ link at the bottom of the page. Select a date and a list of handouts for the selected presentation will appear. Select an item (handout) and Adobe Acrobat Reader will appear in your browser with the requested information. From your browser menu, choose “File”, then “Print.” From this point, the printing process will function as it does for any other document. Each presentation may consist of multiple handouts. Please note that in order to have a complete set of handouts for the

telecast, you will have to select and print each item listed. If necessary, click the “Back” button

from the browser menu bar, repeat this process as needed to print all available documents.
