Grade 5 Newsletter

Dear Grade 5 Families,

The fifth grade Promotion Ceremony will be held June 8 at 9:00 AM in the gym (this however; is not the last day for fifth graders).

What are we studying?

Reading:

Literature – Use text evidence when making inferences andrespond to prompts; analyze character actions and dialogue.

Informational Text – Use text evidence when making inferences; identify the point of view; main idea and key details.

Language/Vocabulary – Identify and explain figurative language; study Greek and Latin affixes (prefixes and suffixes) and roots. We will also be continuing the study of antonyms homonyms.

Writing:

Informative/Explanatory – Students areusing the research gathered about a county in Marylandto create an informational brochure.

Opinion – Students are reading from the works of Chris Van Allsburg. They will each decide which book they believe is the best book written by Chris Van Allsburg. They will then write a piece which will include logically ordered reasons supported with facts and details using text evidence.

Use of Language– We are continuing to emphasize the importance of carefully checking written work for the accurate use of capitalization, punctuation, and spelling (especially words that are found in the text/question).

Math:

Number and Operations in Base Ten –Students will use a variety of strategies to multiply and divide decimals through the hundredths place.

Measurement and Data –Students will convert measurement units (e.g. 1m = 100cm) and solve word problems involving measurement conversions.

Geometry –Students will graph points on a coordinate plane and classify two-dimensional figures based on properties (e.g. identify all figures with at least one pair of parallel lines – from a given set of figures).

Math 5/6:

In the 4th Marking period, students will be working on coordinate grids and understanding the 4 different quadrants. Students will also apply their knowledge about algebraic expressions to solving algebraic equations along with learning about dependent and independent variables. Students will also explore geometry by looking at surface area, volume and area of other shapes besides rectangles. Students will then finish the marking period with reviewing multi-digit computation and analyzing data.

Science:

Life Sciences–Students are studying heredity – the inheritance and variation of traits in plants and animals.

Social Studies:

Economics – Students are studying goods and services produced in Maryland’s past and present. They will also learn how technological changes impact consumers and businesses. They will be studying the Law of Supply and Demand as they work with a partner to run a business (computer simulation).
