January 2016

Dear Future 9thGrade Parent/Guardian,

Today we met with your child’s class to discuss next year’s required and elective course opportunities. The different subject area course formats of Core/Academic and Pre-AP/AP were reviewed. Courses designated as Pre-AP prepare students for Advanced Placement courses (college level instruction) while in high school. G/T placement requires the student to have met specific GISD screening criteria and have been accepted into the program. Students identified as G/T will be provided gifted services through differentiated instruction in the Pre-AP classroom. Each student was shown how to access the Georgetown ISD High School Course Catalog online and received a course selection worksheet. Your child should explore course options and seek your assistance in making informed choices about courses that will best meet his or her educational needs.

Please review your child’s report card and test scores in making course requests. If you are unsure about the best placement for your child, contact his/her current subject area teacher. Students often enroll in a combination of course formats. Each course should be considered separately when making a decision regarding Core/Academic or Pre-AP courses. Georgetown ISD has established guidelines to assist parents and students as they consider course requests for the upcoming school year. Please review the Georgetown ISD Pre-AP/AP Guidelines in the course catalog for more information.

On the course selection sheet, your child should request the following courses: ELAR (English/Language Arts/Reading), math, science, social studies, and up to four electives in areas such as PE/Athletics, Foreign Language, and/or Fine Arts. In addition, please include three alternate elective choices. Your child will also choose an endorsement pathway to work towards earning for graduation. After making the course selections, the student and parent/guardian should then sign the course selection worksheet in order to confirm that all course guidelines have been reviewed and course selections have been made based upon the student’s individual academic strengths, interests, and commitment.

The course selection worksheet should be signed and returned to your child’s CLASS teacher by DATE. Later this spring, your child will receive a course verification sheet that you will be asked to sign and return in order to confirm course placement for the next school year. If your child changes his/her mind about his/her course requests, he/she will need to wait until the course verification process to formally request a change. After the course verification process, very few schedule changes will be considered. Please review the Georgetown ISD Secondary Schools Schedule Change Guidelines in the course catalog for more information.

Sincerely,
