Dear Freshman Parent(s):

Welcome to Loyola High School. Over the course of the next four years, your son will have the opportunity to partake in a variety of educational and extracurricular activities. As such, our community service program will be an essential part of your son’s educational experience; he will be required to participate in a community service project during each of his four years at Loyola.

As a freshman, your son’s community service requirement will be implemented by volunteering with our High School Placement Test Prep Tutoring Program for 8th Graders (HSPT-8). The HSPT-8 Program is offered free of charge to over six-hundred, eighth grade students from under-resourced, inner city schools and is made possible due to the generosity of the Loyola High School Community. The HSPT-8 Program provides tutoring in mathematics, English and interview skills. Each Loyola freshman is required to volunteer for a minimum of two HSPT-8 Program sessions. Freshmen will serve as tutors in this program.

Included in this mailer, you will find a letter addressed to your son (Loyola Student, class of 2021). This letter relays the context of the HSPT-8 Program and provides direction for your son to register and sign-up for his service requirements. Please ensure that your son reads both sides of his letter and shares its contents with you. Parent log-ins cannot be used to access the x2VOL system.

The HSPT-8 Program could not take place without adult volunteers. Loyola students are the primary tutors in the classroom, however in order for this program to be successful, adult volunteers are needed to manage each the forty classrooms that are in use during each tutoring session. We encourage you to sign-up to join your son in volunteering for the HSPT-8 Program!

Unfortunately, last year we fell short on the number of adult volunteers needed. We need your help in assuring this does not happen again. Please check your calendar and sign up! All adult volunteers must be up-to-date with VIRTUS training. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles mandates this training for all adults working with children. This education component helps prevent child sexual abuse by first making every adult employee and volunteer aware of the issues surrounding child sexual abuse. (Archdiocese of Los Angeles). Loyola High School will be offering an on campus VIRTUS training session on Saturday, September 30, during the first tutoring session. The session will begin at 9:00 a.m. You may sign up for this training session through the online HSPT-8 Tutoring Program Freshman PARENT Volunteer Form.

Feel free to contact Mrs. Moran should any questions come to mind. We look forward to working with you and your son.
