Dear ESMS Families,
The academic framework of the ESMS Language and Literature (L&L) Department is based on the following principles:
● Curriculum driven by global concepts and skills prepares students to be educated, productive, and compassionate citizens to meet the challenges of the 21st Century.
● Authentic learning occurs when students are encouraged and supported in a positive learning environment, promoting lifelong learning.
● Students succeed when objectives are clearly communicated and students take ownership of their education.
The L&L Department has adopted the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP), Common Core State Standards (CCSS), and research-based teaching and learning practices in order to achieve the aforementioned principles, creating a cohesive program that ensures a high quality education at ESMS. The MYP encourages students to think independently and drive their own learning by taking part in programs of education that can lead them to some of the highest ranking universities in the world. Ultimately, students will develop the necessary skills to engage with people in an increasingly globalized, rapidly changing world.
IB and Common Core at ESMS
● Teaching and learning in ESMS Language & Literature classrooms are driven by the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme framework and the Common Core State Standards. Throughout each year of the program, students will engage in reading literature & informational texts, writing argumentative, informative and narrative pieces, and using knowledge and conventions of English language. Students will be assessed on the MYP Language & Literature Assessment Criteria: Analyzing, Organizing, Producing Text, Using Language.
● The L&L Department is continuing to work with the UCLA Writing Project to reflect on instructional practices and further develop them in accordance with IB Assessment Criteria and CCSS.
L&L Assessment & Expectations
● A student’s academic grade will be based on summative assessments (65%) the larger projects, or exams from each unit; and formative assessments (35%) such as quizzes and skills based activities. The Language & Literature department is working towards transitioning to Standards Based Grading. This will produce a more authentic indication of the student’s mastery of the Common Core and I.B. standard(s). To boost academic morale, summative assessments, even if not finished on time, may be turned in late with penalties: one date late (-10%); two days late (-20%); three or more days late (-50%).
● Students will receive a separate work habits “mark” for homework and classwork, which is considered practice for the summative assessments. These assignments will be assessed using a mark of CP (√+ for exceeds expectations), CK (√ for meets expectations), CM (√- for does not meet expectations) or NTI (Not Turned In). For every three NTI’s in any class, a student will be assigned a detention to hold students accountable for keeping up with classwork/homework and offer structured time to complete work. Homework is due on the date assigned, except in case of absence. If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to make up any missed work and will receive one extra day for every day absent to make up missed work.
● Student accountability and academic honesty are essential. Students will learn how to find and use valid sources of information, avoid plagiarism, and communicate appropriately using technology. Most writing will be completed in class independently as well as collaboratively.
In order to prepare students to be successful in the 21st century, we believe that collaboration between students, parents, and educators is key. As a parent/guardian, you can support your child by making education a top priority at your home. Discuss what your child is learning in class and help make connections to the world in which we live.
Thank you for supporting your child's education at ESMS.
Sincerely,
ESMS Language & Literature Department
