Dear CTE Candidate,

Welcome to the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Alternate Route Program! We hope that you will find the program to be an exciting and rewarding experience as you begin your new career in the teaching profession. The program is currently the only NJDOE approved alternate route program designed to provide the required educational component for CTE alternate route teachers.

Please note that the program will begin on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Brookdale Community College’s Lincroft campus. Please see the attached program calendar and note that the classes designated as Cohort Saturdays are the only dates you have to travel for; the rest of the work is completed online. It important that you submit your completed Program Application by or before the application deadline stated in your welcome email so that we may begin to send you important program information.

Program format

The CTE Alternate Route Program is a 200 hour instructional program taught in a hybrid format:

·  Most of the sessions will be conducted online and there will be monthly in-person group instruction referred to as “Cohort Saturdays” which meet from 10 am – 3 pm.

·  The location of the “Cohort Saturdays” will be determined by the geographic location of the majority of our applicants, and we will make every attempt to hold “Cohort Saturdays” at a centrally located site.

·  It is a requirement of the program that you attend all “Cohort Saturdays” as well as complete the online program component.

·  The passing grade requirement for each stage of the program, Stage I, Stage IIA, and Stage IIB is a minimum of a “B-” (80%).

E-mail and Internet access

It is a requirement of the course that you have e-mail and internet access.

·  Ongoing communication regarding the course will be done via e-mail; therefore, you should check your email frequently.

·  Please make sure that we have your home e-mail address or the e-mail address that you will use when completing the online component of the program. Your email address is required to set up your access account for the online training system.

·  Internet access is required to complete the online component of the program.

Credit option

The program curriculum and requirements are exactly the same for all CTE Alternate Route candidates whether the program is taken for credit or noncredit.

·  CTE alternate route students have the option of earning 15 education credits toward a Technical Education AAS degree from Brookdale Community College. Please refer to the attached Credit Option Information sheet for details.

·  You may elect the credit option now, or you will be offered the option again later in Stage I, and again at the conclusion of Stage IIA.

Application

In order to begin the CTE Alternate Route Program, you will need to complete the attached application. Applications must be submitted as soon as possible with a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility and a copy of your employment contract or letter from your school/district indicating the subject that you have been hired to teach. The subject must be the same as the CE endorsement that you hold. Once we receive your application, you will be sent a registration/payment form and additional information about the program.

Tuition and textbooks

The total cost for the CTE Alternate Route Program is $1,850 and does not include textbooks. You should purchase your textbooks prior to the first day of your respective Stage I or Stage II class. The estimated cost of textbooks for the entire program is $300-400 depending upon where they are purchased.

You may purchase the books online or from any bookstore that carries them. We strongly recommend searching sites such as www.amazon.com, www.barnesandnoble.com, and www.half.com for discounted textbooks and options to rent or buy new and/or used copies of the required texts. *Please note that Stage I textbooks will be used as reference during Stage II.

Classroom management

New teachers are typically interested in finding as many resources as possible that provide information on classroom management. We have developed a list of websites that provide great resources for classroom management that you may find useful in your classroom. Please refer to the attachment, Classroom Management: Helpful sites

We are looking forward to having you in the program. You will form many wonderful friendships within your cohort and you will find the teaching staff helpful, friendly, experienced and knowledgeable. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. You may also contact CTE Program Assistant, Danielle Ponterio at 732-224-2384 or by email at .
