Dear Colleagues,
As you know by now, I received notice that as of Oct. 16, 2017 our Academic Employees intend to begin a work stoppage. While it is still possible that this situation may be avoided, contingency plan development is underway. I have promised to keep you informed as plans evolve. To date, the following has been determined:

  • As always, our collective priority is our learners. We have informed them about our plans in the event of a work stoppage, providing details about classes, labs, field trips and the use of facilities on all three campuses. We have also created a special site, that will provide learners with updates, information and links to information from both OPSEU and the College Employer Council. Please feel free to use this as a resource.
  • In the event of a work stoppage, all classes except for continuing education (classes after 6 p.m.) will be cancelled. All related assessments and projects will be put on hold. All three of our campuses will remain open to learners, support staff and administrators with most services continuing to operate.
  • Computer labs, study spaces and meeting rooms will be open for student use.
  • Email, Blackboard and Canvas will remain accessible to all.
  • Co-op placements and unsupervised field trips will go ahead as planned.
  • Courses offered through the Centre for Continuing and Online Learning, Corporate Training, and Contract Training provided by non-bargaining employees will continue.
  • Courses in collaborative programs with the University of Ottawa, Carleton University and Nipissing University that are taught by faculty from those institutions will continue.
  • All Students’ Association facilities, such as Starbucks, the SA Sports Facility, the gymnasium, Algonquin Fitness Zone, The Observatory, The Landing in Pembroke, the Pride Centre, Food Cupboard and Clubs and Communities office will remain open. All SA events will run as planned.
  • The student residence will operate normally.

I have urged our learners to continue their studies. Peer tutoring will continue to be offered.
Colleagues, in keeping with the College’s values of Caring, Learning, Integrity and Respect, all strategic and operational planning around a potential work stoppage will be conducted with the overriding purpose of ensuring student success and a harmonious workplace upon resolution of the dispute and the return of affected employees. I am confident in the resilience of our learners and employees as we face this disruption to our academic year together. This resilience is symbolized by a sprig of cedar in our Coat of Arms – a testament to the value we place on Indigenous Knowledge and resolving our differences in a Good Way. As always, I welcome your questions and comments.
Sincerely,
