Dear Club Member:
I wish to inform you of a problem that has come about concerning our club race on Dec 1 (1979). I feel quite badly about it & wish to explain the situation to you. Over 6 weeks ago I wrote Rick Krause, editor of Maine Runner, about Our Closed Club Race. My reason for this action was to give the club a little well deserved publicity; make sure all members were aware of our race, and to encourage future membership. In the next issue our race appeared in the Race Schedule, but as a race open to anyone. Naturally, I called Rick to have this mistake corrected in the next issue, but a week later the magazine went out of business. I then had an article in the
newspaper stating the races was closed (being for MTC members only). Since then I have had numerous calls, some not too pleasant. The Androscoggin Harriers had rented a bus to bring down 30 members; the Central Maine Striders had planned to attend in a large group, with other top runners having planned to
run this race. I have made a decision I hope is fair to all. I have invited these clubs and anyone who has called. Non-MTC members will pay a $2.00 entry fee & receive limited awards. All MTC members will still receive a trophy. The only thing that has really changed is another 50 to 60 people will be running. This was to be our own race after a Great year, I feel very badly. I hope you are not upset at my decision & still plan to run. I feel it is worth explained to you now and not on the day of the race.
It has been a long year. I have made an early New Year’s resolution, which is to get Bombed Out of My Mind at the conclusion of our Banquet. Anyone wishing to join me in the lounge is welcome. You can be firmly assured that any reports of a skinny moustache individual staggering and wandering aimlessly through the halls, is in fact your MTC President.
