Volunteer Logs
Individual members need to keep up with their time. Data must be turned in to National Audubon by 6/30/2010. Hours documented should include the planning of events, even if they are cancelled due to bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Mary will contact Starla Cravens re: her hours working with the Junior Audubon project at Wayland Elementary.
Scrapbook
Brenda will contact the following members about gathering and compiling material so that the organization’s history is not lost:
Tony and Brenda Eaden, Ray Kramer, Tom Hicks, Roseanne R and Frank Abrams
Publicity
Winny will take care of notifying the M-I, Joe Lowe, Jerry Birge and Ky Monthly magazine about the Audubon Bicentennial and our April program with Alan Gehret.
March 27th Field Trip
There are currently nine people signed up to go to the Upper Green River Biological Preserve. Ouida will meet the group at 10:30 a.m.with a WKU van. Personal vehicles should be high clearance due to the terrain. We will meet for car-pooling at 7:30 a.m. at the OCC parking lot.
April Field Trip
We reviewed a number of options for participating in the Ohio Valley Birding Festival. The May 1st trip to Goose Pond was chosen, despite the fact that it is technically May and not April. We will meet at the OCC parking lot at 12:30 p.m. to rendezvous at Wessleman Woods by 2:00 p.m. The cost is $25 per person.
Powell Bird Blind
Work will need to be done in mid-April. We hope to purchase some “indestructible “ binoculars that can be secured to a window sash or similar structure. The possibility of involving the Western KY Botanical Garden in sowing wildflower seeds was discussed.
Spring Break at the Museum
We are committed to two programs at the Area Science Museum during Spring Break. On April 6, Mary will do a “make-and-take” hummingbird program followed by a power point presentation.
On April 8, Brenda will do a “hands-on” bird’s nest program followed by a power pint presentation. Volunteers are Mary, Brenda, Mike, Winny and Judy.
May Meeting
Steve Thomas, a consultant with Mammoth Cave National Park, will present a program on White Nose Syndrome.
Financials
It was decided that Charles would shop for an appropriate version of Quicken software and begin to keep our records in that system. This will ease the production of reports and make the system easily transferable to future finance officers. A limit of $60 was placed on this expenditure.
Three new members joined at the last meeting.
Polo Shirts
Lime green polos with forest green script were chosen as our official uniform for educational presentations. Sheryl Lott of Lotts of Stitches will make them for $15 per shirt.
Birding with Batteries
The various hand-held devises for bird identification were discussed. Scott Harp has an “ebird” and might be willing to bring it to our June meeting at Panther Creek. This would provide on interesting “hands-on” program for the last regular meeting of the year. It would also help us decide whether or not to purchase one for DCAS use.
Squirrel Study
Brenda will contact the graduate student conducting the study for access to the online questionnaire. Members are encouraged to participate.
Greenbelt Project
The Red Tail Hawk is nearing completion. David Stratton would like to discuss additional birds to be included (belted kingfisher, a flock of sparrows?). Concerns were raised about the cost and the original idea of encouraging other community entities to sponsor birds. It was agreed that a public ceremony should accompany the unveiling of the Red Tail Hawk.
Yellowwood Tree at Texas Gas
Charles will contact Integrity Nursery re: replacing the tree. DCAS will need to organize a watering committee. The tree will need water once a week through October. We will do a sign-up at the April meeting.
