Laptop Deployment Information Sheet

Name: Nicholas Miller / Userid: nmiller / Supervisor: DiMarco
PC System Name: scslt003 / Desk: DC 2306 (#2) / CSCF reference: RT#54536

Your CSCF Point of Contact: Please direct any questions regarding this machine, or your computing environment to Mike Gore, , x36205, DC2565; or Lawrence Folland, Manager of Research Support, , DC2563, x32214.

System configuration:

The laptop you have received is a dual-boot Windows XP Pro/Linux Ubuntu system. Its disk has been partitioned so that each OS has dedicated space plus a single shared partition.

Linux login information:

The general-use userid for the Linux OS is: nmiller. The password is shown on the sticker affixed to the top of this page. Under our Linux distribution (Ubuntu), userid “root” is not used for administrative purposes. Instead, use the “sudo” facility with your normal userid and password (e.g. “sudo –s” to invoke a root shell).

Windows login information:

For normal use, log into the Windows system with your usual CS Unix userid: nmillerand the password affixed to the top of this page. By default, your userid has been configured as an Administrator. If you prefer, this can be removed and you can login as Administrator (using the same password as above) to do administrative tasks. Your Point of Contact can help you with this.

CSCF administrative userid:

On each operating system there is a userid “cscf-adm” which CSCF staff use for administration. We request that you do not remove this userid or change its password.

Backups and Printing:

Your system is not backed up. You may wish to may a drive to your home directory on your CS Core Unix account to store important data (but be advised that this space is quota-limited). Your system is equipped with a CD-RW drive/DVD burner which you can use to create your own backups (but note that CSCF does not provide blank media). Please see the link, below, for notes on setting up printers.

Network “fair-share” and security:

We do not impose fixed bandwidth or transfer limits on your Internet usage. We expect that you will act responsibly and not abuse this trust policy. In our experience, excessive usage is often a sign of a compromised system (one which has been usurped by unauthorized users), and therefore we monitor your network usage for abnormal usage patterns. We encourage you to use strong passwords and leave the security measures on the systems in place.

Return of Equipment:

Please note that you are responsible for returning this equipment in good working order. If you have any problems with the machine, speak to your Point of Contact immediately. If the machine is ever lost or stolen, notify your Point of Contact and they will initiate a police investigation. The machine must be returned within 30 days of any change in your status as a full-time graduate student with the School of Computer Science.
