Project Title: “Automatic School Bell Implementation, Training program on Wiring, Solar Power System and Research on Feasibility of Power improvement of Mini-Hydropower and wireless Network at Salambu, Kavre”

Date of Conduction:7th August to 13th August

What we did?

Our Community Education Project starts at Old Bus Park, Kathmandu at 5:00 AM. We departed from Bus Park, Kathmandu at around 7:30 a.m. We reached Salambu at around 5:00 p.m. As our plan we stayed at Salambu at “Outreach Centre of Dhulikhel Hospital “at Salambu. During transportation there are a lot of complexities due to dirt road. This is the second day of community Education project. We have organized the interaction program with villagers and teacher of Shree Buddha Himalaya Higher Secondary School. And we planned feasibility study, training program and research on Hydropower and Wireless Networks. Villagers organized us to welcome us and field visit to “Chauri KholaV Mini-Hydropower”. We had visited reservoir of that hydropower which is very poor in situation. There is problem in Water canal system, intake system; status of turbine is very poor. The third day started with meeting with Vice Principal of “Shree Buddha Himalaya Higher secondary School”. He warmly welcomed us. And our training program was scheduled to be of two days. And this was our 1st day. We started our training program with the introduction to Renewable Energy by Pankaj Regmi and Arjun Dhakal for student of class 10. And we concluded our program for the first day. The fourth Day is planned to implement the school Bell. And further training in “Basic House Wiring, Solar Power system and Electric Hazard” was given by Pramesh Gautam. And “Carrier and study after completing S.L.C” were given by Ravi Shrestha. After completing program, we started research on development of solar power system and wireless Network. We went to VDC office and we collected data which can be beneficial for us and we started to collect information of village and much other information from villagers. And we visit Majhi- pheda village completely. And finally, we return back to Kathmandu.

Why we did?

Mission: To improve the quality of life in rural communities, through community services, community education and business incubation

Vision: To help Kathmandu University to establish outreach centers to expose its students and faculty members to rural environments, partly to enhance the students’ understanding of the rural living conditions, partly to enhance motivation for service in rural communities in the country

Objectives

  • For implementation of School Bell.
  • To share knowledge about solar system (renewable energy) to rural environment.
  • To share knowledge about Wiring for students
  • To practically implement the academic knowledge in rural communities.
  • To identify the areas of scope and possibilities where we can work on for various research or surveys.
  • To educate the community, basically local students, about some basic skills on electricity related areas.
  • To educate and benefit the underserved areas specially hills, mountains and unreached indigenous groups and other backward communities.
  • To bridge the gaps between the rural and urban community, interactions or through outreach centers.
  • To enhance the knowledge of the scope of electrical and electronics Engineering in Nepal.

How we did?

Power Improvement in Mini-Hydropower:

All the physical structures are performing well but it’s not running in efficient way. The production of electricity is less than the installed capacity. The main cause of this problem is that the intake of water is not in the proper amount as per the diversion has to provide. Since, there is not RCC diversion in every rainy season the existing diversion made by local manpower gets damaged. This creates problem of intake of water in proper amount as well as in discontinuous way. So, the micro hydropower is not producing electricity as per its installed capacity. Another problem that is effecting on the reduction of efficiency of the micro-hydropower is the discharge of the water in open channel. Increasing this can increase the more production of electricity. The next problem is that, the pelton turbine used by the micro hydropower should be changed as it has become old which reduces its performance resulting reduction in efficiency of micro hydropower. If these aspects are considered then the efficiency i.e. electricity production of micro hydropower will be increased. The most important thing to be changed or required for this micro hydropower is the RCC diversion. Establishment of this diversion only can solve the 80% problem of inefficiency of this micro hydropower.

Wireless Networking:

In this place wire line construction, setting up wireless networks is faster.

Benefits to Customers: Educationpart, Health and Medicine part, Community Development part, Small Business Development part, Environment Monitoring and Protection part

Benefits to Society:Solution to existing problems, slow economic growth despite large efforts in education, health, and industry owing to the bottleneck caused by underdeveloped communication networks

Benefits to Operators and Benefits to Manufacturers

Requirements owing to the natural rural conditions:Distancescale, Signaltransmission, Robustness

Requirements owing to the rural communication conditions: Ease of installation, Power source

Requirements owing to rural people’s situation: Need of Services, Ease of operation, maintenance, and upgrading, Cost of construction, operation, and maintenance, Scalability.

Before opening of private wireless Network Company Wi-Max is best option even though which is not economic.

Automatic School Bell Installation

It is percussion instrument used in schools that tells information about starting and completing of periods to students and teachers. There has been problem due to the irregularity of the classes because of the ringing of bell manually and easy to easy.

Routine can be changed

Provision for Emergency Bell

Inbuilt power supply

Bell will ring for 5 sec.

Thereis not necessary to allocate a person for rang the bell examples for villagers to show the technologydevelopment and enhancement. Times will not affected by Loadsheading which is set on control circuit.
