Databases at Magnolia Library (Alphabetically Listed)

The BRCC Library offers students access to approximately 80 electronic databases, which are available both on and off campus. The electronic databases are an invaluable resource for research. Descriptions of some of these databases are below:

African American Newspapers

African American Newspapers is limited to those items relating specifically to African American Studies. This family of historical collections contains books, pamphlets, broadsides, newspapers, government documents and ephemera printed in America over three centuries. African American Newspapers’ coverage spans from 1827 to 1998 and includes the text of 270 newspapers. Items are searchable via dates and eras, article types, languages, places of publication, and newspaper titles. Part of the Readex Historical Newspapers Collection.

America’s Historical Newspapers (LA State package)

Database of American newspapers that can be used to explore America’s past. Coverage spans from 1837-1936 and includes over 2,000 newspapers. Searchable topics include current events, and special reports. Published by Readex, a division of NewsBank Inc.

Art Full text 1984-Present (now part of EBSCOhost)

This database offers full text plus abstracts and indexing of an international array of peer-selected publications it includes expanded coverage of Latin American, Canadian, Asian and other non-Western art, new artists, contemporary art, exhibition reviews, and feminist criticism. Full-text coverage for selected periodicals is included. In addition to articles, Art Full Text indexes reproductions of works of art that appear in indexed periodicals. Subjects covered range from Advertising Art, Antiques, Archaeology, Architecture and Architectural History, Art History, Computers in Art, Crafts, Decorative Arts, Fashion Design, Folk Art, Graphic Arts, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Motion Pictures, Museology, Non-Western Art, Painting, Photography, Pottery, Sculpture, Television, Textiles, and Video.

Art Index Retrospective(now part of EBSCOhost)

An in-depth database of contemporary art history, Art Index Retrospective allows users through 55 years of art journalism. Users can research leading English-language sources, plus others published in French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Dutch. Besides periodicals, users have access to data from important yearbooks and select museum bulletins. Art Index Retrospective helps users find contemporary criticism of art at the time of its debut, track the body of work of an artist or movement, find artists’ interviews and other commentary. CQ Researcher

CQ Researcher offers reporting and analysis on issues found in the news. The database is noted for its coverage of health, social trends, criminal justice, international affairs, education, the environment, technology, and the economy. Reports are published weekly in print and online 44 times a year by CQ Press, an imprint of SAGE Publications. The consistent, reader-friendly organization provides researchers with an introductory overview; background and chronology on the topic researched; an assessment of the current situation related to the topic; tables and maps; pro/con statements from representatives of opposing positions; and bibliographies of key sources. This database dates back to 1991. PDF files are available for reports from January 1996; color PDFs are available for reports published after January 2001.

Dissertation Abstracts

This database, made available through ProQuest, has been publishing dissertations and theses since 1938. In that time, the database hascollected over 2 million graduate works from graduate schools around the world. Access is available to over 700 active university publishing partners. In addition to publishing, the database provides access to graduate works for thousands of libraries around the world.

EBSCO A to Z

Part of the EBSCO family of 59 total databases, users can search titles of indexed journals, periodicals, etc. aggregated through EBSCO. Searches can be created using the index, titles, subjects, or basic search option tabs. Subjects covered by the periodicals indexed in EBSCO A to Z include biology, chemistry, health, medicine, law, geography, history, agriculture, literature, art, criminal justice, psychology, business, technology, film, and many more.

EBSCOhost Databases

This suite of databasesis one of world's most-used reference resources. It is customizable, intuitive search enabled, and designed to cater to user needs and preferences at every level of research. BRCC Library provides access to 59 EBSCOhost databases, including the EBSCOhost eBook collection.EBSCOhost also serves as the foundation for EBSCO's Discovery Service,which provides users with access to an institution’s entire collection via a single, customizable entry point. Subjects covered by the EBSCOhost databases range from art and literature to law, medicine, history, and beyond.

Gale Group

Gale®, part of Cengage Learning, this database specializes in e-research and educational publishing for libraries, schools and businesses. Best known for its accurate and authoritative reference content as well as its intelligent organization of full-text magazine and newspaper articles, the company creates and maintains more than 600 databases that are published online, in print, as eBooks and in microform.

The databases available to users include Biography in Context, Gale Virtual Reference Library, Literature Resource Center, Scribner Writers Series, and the Twayne Authors Authors Series.

JSTOR

JSTORis a not–for–profit service that helps scholars, researchers, and students discover, use, and build upon a wide range of content in a trusted digital archive of over one thousand academic journals and other scholarly content. The database is searchable by a variety of subject/topics.

Learning Express

LearningExpressprovides resources based on a series of Learning Centers (modules)that includes practice tests, exercises, skill-building courses, eBooks, and the information you need to achieve measured results. The eight modules included cover popular software tutorials, GED preparation, workplace skills improvement, occupation practice tests, U.S. citizenship, recursos para Hispanohablantes, admissions preparation, and skills assessment.

Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe

LexisNexis encompasses authoritative legal-publishing brands dating back to the 19th century including; Butterworths® in the United Kingdom, Canada, the Asia-Pacific region, Les Editions du Juris Classeur in France, and Martindale-Hubbell® and Matthew Bender® worldwide. Searches can be conducted in Easy Search, and Power Search modes.

Math SciNet/Mathematical Reviews

MathSciNet® is an electronic publication offering access to a searchable database of reviews, abstracts and bibliographic information for much of the mathematical sciences literature. Over 100,000 new items are added each year, most of them classified according to the Mathematics Subject Classification. Authors are uniquely identified, enabling a search for publications by individual author rather than by name string.

Naxos Music Library

Naxos Music Library [NML] is the world´s largest online classical music library. Currently, it offers streaming access to more than 52,677 CDs with more than 756,740 tracks, standard and rare repertoire. Over 800 new CDs are added to the library every month. Classic pop and rock music as well as Chinese orchestral music are also represented.The contents can be searched by composer, work, genre and label; by keyword search and by a sophisticated advanced search engine with up to 11 combined search criteria.

Oxford Reference Online

Oxford Reference Online brings together language and subject reference works from one of the world's biggest and most trusted reference publishers into a single cross-searchable resource.
The Premium Collection offers a huge range of fully-indexed, extensively linked, up to date, and cross-searchable dictionary, language reference, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press, including detailed information across a broad subject range from titles in the world-renowned Oxford Companions series.Literature and Western Civilization Collections are also available to Premium Collection subscribers for a small extra charge. All Oxford Digital Reference Shelf titles are fully cross-searchable and are seamlessly integrated into Oxford Reference Online: Premium Collection.

ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health

This database provides full text journals, evidence based resources, and dissertations to support the study of the many aspects of nursing or the allied health professions, including physical therapy, radiography, dietetics, dental hygiene, and the clinical laboratory sciences. It is offered through ProQuest.

Small Business Reference Center

Offered through EBSCO this database presents information relevant to starting a small business. Users can searchusing basic terms, or by accessing pre-selected topics including Business areas, Industry Information by Small Business Type, Business Basics, and Start-up Kit and Business Plans.

WorldCat (Via First Search)

This database allows users to search library catalogs of books and materials worldwide. Searches can be created at the Basic, Advanced, and Expert levels. Information is aggregated according to OCLC standards.
