(Please include a stamped addressed envelope)INTRODUCTION
Until it was revoked in the 13th century, it was compulsory for interments to take place in the deceased’s own churchyard. The whole of the forest is in the parish of Lydford and funerals were therefore obliged to cross the moor from farms to the churchyard.
Theroute of 13 miles is a compromise, but as you enjoy the walk, try to imagine the difficult task of carrying a coffin across the open moor and rivers without the benefit of modern fabrics and equipment.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE WALK
The Route: The walk will start at Bellever Forest Car Park and finish at the National Trust Car Park at Lydford Gorge. Each team must plan and prepare their own route using the grid references which will be given for each of the checkpoints. The team should use OS Explorer map OL28 of Dartmoor.
Suggested Equipment:Suitable equipment for a day on open moorland in September. Conditions, which can change rapidly, should mean that you have at least; good footwear, waterproofs, hat, gloves, map, compass, torch, whistle, food and drink. Be prepared for anything from hot sun to cold rain.
Skills: Due to the fact that some of the walk is on open moorland, at least one of the team must have basic navigation, compass and map reading skills. If you feel you do not have these skills you may be guided by one of the Dartmoor Rescue Team Plymouth team. (Just tick the box overleaf)
Timings: The walk will start at 0900 hours (no team will be accepted after 9.30 a.m.). The cut off time for the finish will be 1800 hours.
