Reflections:

Student Comments:

1. What are my strongest areas of performance according to this assessment model? At this point in my student teaching (3 months), my strongest area is the classroom environment. Although, this most likely was not my strongest area the first few weeks, after observing my mentor teacher and practice of my own I feel this is my strongest area at this point in time. I have become increasingly more comfortable with students and have great interaction with them. My behavior management has also become stronger with time. Observing my mentor teacher has been a tremendous help in seeing what is successful and what is not. I am now comfortable with discipline if necessary. I am clear about my expectations to the students and monitor their behaviors at all times.

2. What areas do I need to focus on most for improvement? The area most needing improvement is the instruction. When starting a new project I need to think it through a little more so that I can explain the objectives and procedures in a clearer manner. I feel like I am inconsistent with that. If I have two back to back art classes (teaching the same thing), my second class is better taught and understanding from the students is better. I need to make that first class just as clear as the second. Also I need to work on my questions to the students and discussions. I do this but only to a small degree. I use this to be sure the students are understanding what we are doing. According to this assessment I also need a little improvement in the professionalism area. Although I have chosen basic on quite a few of these, I feel like they are only basic at this point because I am limited in my internship. I do not have much contact with the families except with general info. I am aware that this will change when I am in full practice. My relationships within the school are good, but I feel like I am not close with everyone because I know I will be leaving at the end of December. Leaving also affects the decision making. I am not authorized to make decisions as I am not an employee of the school, but I have often given my opinion.

3. What have I learned from this self-assessment experience? At first glance I figured and did not believe that I would be any more than basic or unsatisfactory in each category. My thoughts of this was purely because I am only 3 months into teaching and have not had any prior experience in the classroom. After reading most of the categories and criteria, I have learned that I am at this point (3 months later) proficient in some areas. I would not consider myself distinguished in any category but understand that it will come in time.
