DANE COUNTY CULTURAL AFFAIRS COMMISSION

2009 CALL FOR ART

Attention Dane County Visual Artists

The Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission (DCCAC) issues a call for artists to submit art for consideration and inclusion in the Cultural Affairs Commission’s signature 2011 art calendar and 2010 art poster and companion bookmark. The 2011 calendar will be the 12th edition and 2010 poster the 30th in an annual series. Each year, nearly 9,000 calendars and the same number of posters are distributed throughout Dane County and beyond. They have become beloved icons that highlight the vitality of Dane County’s artistic and cultural landscape.

Two-dimensional art in all mediums will be considered. Selections will be made from images submitted. Fourteen images will be chosen for the calendar and one image will be chosen for the poster and bookmark. Selection criteria applied by DCCAC Art Advisory Committee include: artistic quality, representation of Dane County throughout the year, market appeal, and illustration of the theme. Artists must be Wisconsin residents at the time of application; Dane County artists receive preference.

If selected artwork needs to be re-photographed to meet production specifications, the Cultural Affairs Commission will assist. In addition, for the calendar, $100 will be awarded per image (14 in total) to each selected artist for reproduction rights. For the poster, $500 will be awarded to the selected artist for reproduction rights. Wisconsin galleries representing selected artists also will be acknowledged, if desired.

Theme

The theme for 2009 art submissions is Flora and Fauna. In the Cultural Affairs Commission’s next art calendar (2011) and art poster (2010), showcased art will feature flora and fauna characteristic of our Dane County home and what makes it distinctive. According to Webster’s Dictionary flora is defined as plant life: the plant life characteristic of a region, period, or special environment, and fauna is defined as animals or animal life: the animals or animal life of a region, period, geological stratum, or adapted for living in a specific environment. Included might be flora and fauna that are native, non-native, domestic or agricultural, close up or at long range, in the wild, under production, available for purchase, or presented for consumption, and with or without people. Favored images will depict Dane County in some way. They will highlight attributes and features that remind us of our Dane County home. Broad and creative interpretation of the theme Flora and Fauna is welcomed. Representation of the seasons and annual cycle is desired.

Application deadline: September 1, 2009.

Selection process will be completed by December 31, 2009 and all applicants will be notified by then.
