Dance Team Audition Check List:

  • Completely read the Dance Team Audition application packet
  • Signed Participant Agreement
  • One 5x7 color photo of applicant (headshot or ¾ length shot preferred)
  • One Page Resume (header must include full name, email, cell phone number, year in school and years on team if applicable)
  • Must be currently enrolled at SCU
  • All dance team members must be full-time undergraduate students
  • The minimum cumulative GPA to audition is a 2.25 for all applicants
  • Current students and transfer students must provide a copy of their unofficial transcript showing the cumulative GPA from college courses
  • Read participant dues section and be able to provide (or fundraise for) fees on or before the date due

Technical Skills

The technical skills listed below will be evaluated throughout the audition and try-out. Please use these skills as a guide to help you prepare. This list does not limit other skills from being judged, and on the same token, if you cannot perform one or more of the skills listed below, you will still be evaluated.

Dance Team applicants will perform:

  • Flexibility: right, left and center splits
  • Turns: double and triple (right only), turns in second, and foutes
  • Jumps: toe touch, turning disc, c-jump, single stag/calypso
  • Leaps: right, left, center and switch (all directions)
  • Leg Hold, Leg Hold turns, Tilts, Leg Extensions
  • Fight song
  • Combination Jazz/Pom/Hip Hop routine combination

Appearance/What to Wear:

The Santa Clara University Dance Team members are expected to present themselves in a professional and collegiate manner at all times. All candidates trying out must wear athletic attire appropriate for an audition or tryout:

Dance Wear:

  • Crop tops/Sports Bra tops are required (school colors preferred)
  • Tight fitting black bottoms (jazz pants, capris, shorts)
  • Jazz shoes/foot paws for warm up, technique, and combos
  • Dancers need to come "game-day ready" which means hair down, styled and in performance make up (lipstick, dark eye shadow, etc.)
  • Jewelry is limited to small stud earrings only. (No necklaces, bracelets, rings, etc.)
  • No gum!

Academics

Strong academic performance is a priority for the Spirit Program. While a minimum 2.25 cumulative GPA is required to audition, additional consideration will be given to those with a 3.4 or higher. Continued academic success is required. A minimum of a 2.0 cumulative GPA is required throughout the year and team members will be placed on probation if they drop below this standard.

Requirements and Commitment

  • Membership Fees - All team members will be required to pay a fee of $250 to cover the cost of the following items. This fee is non-negotiable and is required of each member on or before the first official practice. All items listed will be owned by the team member and she will be able to keep them at the end of the season.
  • Warm Ups (Top and bottom)
  • Warm Up/Hip Hop Performance/Outside-wear Tennis Shoes
  • Bloch Adult Slip-On Jazz Shoe in Tan
  • Tan tights
  • Team, matching shirts
  • Required to attend all practices (3 practices per week)
  • Must participate in all* men’s and women’s basketball games, Friday Home Field Baseball Games and other athletic or campus events deemed by the University. Remember, you represent the image of Santa Clara Athletics and your presence at other events may become necessary.
  • Required to participate in team fundraising efforts.
  • Must be accountable, responsible, and have excellent time management skills.
  • Must be positive and respect teammates, self, Coach, and Staff Administrators.
  • All students are subject to the academic and behavioral policies of the University, including but not limited to the Student Code of Contact (which is available online) and anti-hazing policies.

*SCUDT Members will be allowed missed appearances throughout the season (October through March), not including University breaks and holidays. This number will be determined after the basketball schedule is announced. Please reviewteam schedules in advance.

  • You will have the opportunity to be a part of theSCUDT and will represent your University as an ambassador to the Athletic Department. You will get to lead school spirit and become a major influence among the students and Ruff Riders at SCU sporting events.
  • Learn valuable marketing and advertising skills in real world setting through major fundraising opportunities such as the annual SCU Bronco Dancerz Clinic.
  • May receive the opportunity to travel to Las Vegas to support the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams at the West Coast Conference Tournament which culminates the Spirit season.
