Job Title: General Medical Practitioners for Out-of-Hours Service
Salary: To be discussed at interview
Base: Initially any of 4 Primary Care Centres
Reports to: Clinical Director
Accountable to: Clinical Director
JOB SUMMARY
Ø To provide primary care medical services in the out-of-hours period.
Ø To work closely with all other support services in the provision of a
quality Out-of-Hours service. (OOHs)
Ø To support the development of modern primary care services Out-of-Hours.
KEY TASK AREAS
1. To provide GMS services to recognised clinical standards whilst
observing Clinical Governance objectives and regional quality
standards.
2. To respond to medical and other problems presented by patients,
including history taking, examination, diagnosis, investigation,
treatment and referral. To formulate a treatment pathway which is
evidence based.
3. Assess clinical priorities and determine the order in which calls are to
be handled.
4. Contact each patient and depending on clinical need:
§ Give telephone advice.
§ Invite patient to OOHs centre
§ Arrange for Visit to patient at home.
§ Call ambulance.

5. Consistently monitor incoming calls and respond promptly to all
incoming calls.
6. Ensure that all medication prescribed and dispensed is documented fully.
7. Ensure that a working diagnosis and outcome/disposal is fully recorded
for each call.
8. To be competent in the use of appropriate medical equipment including
a defibrillator and maintain skills through regular training.
9. To provide appropriate health promotion and preventative health care
advice to all patients attending the OOHs service.
10. To attend service meetings and other meetings as may be necessary to
support the future development of the service.
11. To become competent in the use of Information Technology in support of
using the OOHs computerised system.
12. Give leadership and clear instructions to co-workers eg.
Drivers / Receptionists / Nurses.
13. Alert the Medical Managers promptly of any consultations which might
give rise to a complaint and co-operate fully with the complaints
procedure.
14. To accept direction from Medical Co-ordinators while working as part of a primary health care team.
15. To provide medical cover as necessary to patients in community hospitals within the Dalriada Urgent Care area.
16. Observe all OOHs Operating Procedures to required standards.
17. To provide medical cover to patients in NHSSB Local or National
Enhanced Service Schemes where required.
18. Any other responsibilities within the scope of the job that may be
agreed from time to time.
19. To be responsible to Dalriada Urgent Care and subject to the Company’s Complaints Procedure.

KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
· General Medical Practitioners and other professionals.
· Medical colleagues and other staff within an In Hours practice to which
an attachment is arranged, if appropriate.
· The Clinical Director and other OOHs Service colleagues and staff.
· Casualty and general ward staff within the hospitals at the
Primary Care Centre locations.
· Other primary and community Health care professionals within NHSSB
area and other Health Boards when appropriate.
· Statutory and voluntary organisations where appropriate.
· Clinical Governance Lead.
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
· Ensure services are provided to a highly quality and that they are of a
consistent standard to meet the identified needs of patients.
· To work within the requirements of the Company’s clinical governance
arrangements.
· To use current evidenced based approaches to patient care.
· To share responsibility for conducting appropriate and comprehensive
clinical risk assessment and implement relevant risk management
strategies.
· Provide a supportive environment for staff and share responsibility for
provision of clinical supervision and individual personal development
and performance monitoring.
· Assist and support the training of GP Registrars and other health
professionals.
Dalriada Urgent Care
· Contribute to the development and implementation of policies,
procedures and guidance relating to medical practice, and ensure clinically appropriate health interventions and technologies are provided utilising the latest available evidence.
· To identify best practice during OOHs and provide feedback.
· Contribute to the development of the service by working with other
team members.
· To enable collaborative working relationship with all key stakeholders
for the benefit of patient care.
· To provide clinical feedback to enable service developments.
· To create an environment where flexibility and adaptability are
positively encouraged.
· To participate in the training of First Contact Nurses and Nurses
involved in triage and treatment.
· To participate in the development of clinical protocols in support of the
OOHs Service.
· Maintain an advice/PCC/home visit ratio consistent with national
average and current local service average.
EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT
· To continually update personal professional knowledge and
competence by undergoing continuing professional development.
· Provide feedback that contributes to the development of the service
clinical guidelines, protocols, equipment, formulary.
· Undertake annual appraisals with an approved GP appraiser.
NB: This job description is not an exhaustive list of duties and will be
reviewed in light of changing needs and developments. The post
holder will be required to carry out other duties appropriate to the grade
and scope of the post.

PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
1. Full Registration GMC
2. Joint Certificate Vocational training (or equivalent)
3. Evidence of annual GP Appraisal at least once since April 2003
DESIRABLE CRITERIA:
1. Doctors should be able to demonstrate that they have experience of
working within a GP Co-operative Out of Hours Service, or within a GP Rota or a GP Deputising agency, covering Out of Hours work within the past 3 years.
