Three Day Lesson Plan for Communists Triumph in China
Grade: 10th Grade
Subject: Cross-Curricular with History and English Literature
Date of lesson: May 27-29th
Unit Overview: The purpose of this lesson is to analyze the point of view of the Cultural Revolution from the Government’s perspective and from the reality of those experiences in the Cultural Revolution. The use of propaganda was widespread in China at the time and it is important for students to understand and analyze the different perspectives and the motivations behind each perspective. This can be a portion of a larger lesson plan on China.
Content Standard:10.9 Students analyze the international developments in the post–World War II world. 4. Analyze the Chinese Civil War, the rise of Mao Tse-tung, and the subsequent political
and economic upheavals in China (e.g., the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, and the Tiananmen Square uprising).

2.3 Write expository compositions, including analytical essays and research reports:
a. Marshal evidence in support of a thesis and related claims, including information on all relevant perspectives.
b. Convey information and ideas from primary and secondary sources accurately and coherently.

d. Include visual aids by employing appropriate technology to organize and record information on charts, maps, and graphs.

5 minutes / Introduction:
Teacher will begin lesson with Daily Journal question that relates to the lesson of the day. Students will be asked to define the following terms: (1) Mao Zedong, (2) Jiang Jieshi, (3) Commune, (4) Red Guards, and (5) Cultural Revolution. Students will be encouraged to write as much information as they have on these figures and concepts.

10 minutes / Direct Instruction: Teacher will begin lesson by providing a PowerPoint Presentation on Chairman Mao Zedong. This introductory lesson will set the stage for the upcoming three day lesson plan. In addition, teacher will demonstrate to students how to take Cornell notes on the PowerPoint Presentation. Students will be asked to highlight significant events and to review the main concepts as the presentation is being delivered.
10 minutes / Modeled Instruction:Teacher will guide students through the reading of the chapter entitled Communists Triumph in China from the book Modern World History: Patterns of Interaction. Students will read the following sections:
(1) Civil War in China
Internal Struggles
Involvement of the United States
Chinese Political Opponents—1945
Nationalist vs. Communists
10 minutes / Guided Practice/Checking for Understanding: After the reading, students will be broken into groups and will be assigned a group name (letter or number). Teacher will explain to students to explain the differences and similarities between the Nationalist and Communists parties and their perspectives. Students will compose a T-Chart, or Venn Diagram.
10 minutes / Independent Practice: Teacher will allow students to work in their groups and figure out the main concepts belonging to the parties.
IWOC: Students will be asked to review their Main Terms definitions in-class worksheets, and notes for a future quiz.
5minutes / Closure: (How are you summarizing the learning and previewing tomorrow’s lesson?): Teacher will close lesson by asking students to verbally reflect on what they learned that day. Teacher will do a quick round of random Main Terms and chapter questions to check for understanding before she dismisses students.

In addition, teacher will demonstrate to students how to take Cornell notes on the PowerPoint Presentation. Students will be asked to highlight significant events and to review the main concepts as the presentation is being delivered.

10 minutes / Guided Practice/Checking for Understanding: After the reading, students will be asked to select a topic from the lesson and be asked to do a research project/essay on that specific topic. First, students will select their main topic. For example, some students may want to do extensive research on Mao Zedong. They will be taken to the computer Lab and asked to gather information about their topic. They will then construct their research paper. This will take a few days.
10 minutes / Independent Practice: Teacher will allow students to work in the computer lab and gather as much information as they can about their topic.
IWOC: Students will be asked to continue their research at home if they need to.
5minutes / Closure: (How are you summarizing the learning and previewing tomorrow’s lesson?): Teacher will close lesson by asking students to reflect on the day’s lesson by writing an exit slip. List two things that you learn from the lesson. How will you apply this to your research topic?

This lesson will be a form of review from yesterday’s lesson.In addition, teacher will demonstrate to students how to take Cornell notes on the PowerPoint Presentation. Students will be asked to highlight significant events and to review the main concepts as the presentation is being delivered.
10 minutes / Modeled Instruction: Teacher will guide students through the reading of the chapter entitled Communists Triumph in China from the book Modern World History: Patterns of Interaction. Students will answer the following sections:
(1) Terms and Names (A Review from first lesson)
(2) Mao Zedong’s Reforms
(3) What circumstances prevented Mao’s Great Leap Forward from bringing economic prosperity to China?
(4) What policies or actions enabled the Communist to defeat the Nationalists in their long civil war?
10 minutes / Guided Practice/Checking for Understanding: After the reading and responding to the questions, students will be asked to work on a group activity, called Is Mao Zedong a Hero or a Villain? Students will read the passages and respond to the questions using their literary text.
10 minutes / Independent Practice: Teacher will allow students to work with their groups and use the computers in the lab to continue working on the research papers.
5minutes / Closure: (How are you summarizing the learning and previewing tomorrow’s lesson?): Teacher will close lesson by asking students to reflect on the day’s lesson by writing an exit slip. List two things that you learn from the lesson. How will you apply this to your research topic?
