SECTION 05310 - STEEL DECK

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1  SUMMARY

  1. This Section includes the following:
  2. Steel roof deck.
  3. Parapet closure deck.
  4. Noncomposite steel form deck.

1.2  SUBMITTALS

  1. Product data for each type of deck specified.
  2. Shop drawings showing layout and types of deck panels, anchorage details, reinforcing channels, deck openings, special jointing, accessories, and attachments to other construction.
  3. Product certificates signed by manufacturers of steel deck certifying that their products comply with specified requirements.
  4. Welder certificates signed by Contractor certifying that welders comply with requirements specified under the "Quality Assurance" Article. Submit for Owner information only, no action required.
  5. Product test reports from qualified independent testing agencies evidencing compliance with requirements of the following based on comprehensive testing:
  6. Mechanical fasteners.

1.3  QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Installer Qualifications: Engage an experienced Installer who has completed steel deck similar in material, design, and extent to that indicated for this Project and with a record of successful in-service performance.
  2. Testing Agency Qualifications: To qualify for acceptance, an independent testing agency must demonstrate to Engineer’s satisfaction, based on evaluation of agency-submitted criteria conforming to ASTME699, that it has the experience and capability to satisfactorily conduct the testing indicated without delaying the Work.
  3. Welding Standards: Comply with applicable provisions of AWS D1.1 "Structural Welding Code--Steel" and AWS D1.3 "Structural Welding Code--Sheet Steel."
  4. Certify that each welder has satisfactorily passed AWS qualification tests for welding processes involved and, if pertinent, has undergone recertification.
  5. FM Listing: Except for 3 inch Type N deck, provide steel roof deck evaluated by Factory Mutual and listed in Factory Mutual "Approval Guide" for Class1-60 windstorm ratings.
  6. Engineer Qualifications: A professional engineer legally authorized to practice in the jurisdiction where Project is located and experienced in providing engineering services of the kind indicated that have resulted in the installation of steel deck similar to this Project in material, design, and extent and that have a record of successful in-service performance.

1.4  DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

  1. Protect steel deck from corrosion, deformation, and other damage during delivery, storage, and handling.
  2. Stack steel deck on platforms or pallets and slope to provide drainage. Protect with a waterproof covering and ventilate to avoid condensation.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1  MANUFACTURERS

  1. Manufacturers: Unless otherwise directed by the Owner, provide products by one of the following:
  2. Bowman Metal Deck Armco, Inc.
  3. Consolidated Systems, Inc.
  4. Epic Metals Corp.
  5. Robertson A United Dominion Co.
  6. Roof Deck, Inc.
  7. United Steel Deck, Inc.
  8. Vulcraft Div. of Nucor Corp.
  9. Wheeling Corrugating Co., Div. of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp.

2.2  ROOF DECK

  1. Steel Roof Deck: Fabricate panels conforming to SDI Publication No.28 "Specifications and Commentary for Steel Roof Deck" and the following:
  2. Galvanized Steel Sheet: ASTMA653/A653M, Structural Steel (SS), Grade 33, G90, zinc coated according to ASTMA525.
  3. Deck Profile and Depth: One of the following or as noted otherwise on Drawings.
  4. Type WR, wide rib, 1-1/2 inches.
  5. Type N, wide rib, 3 inches.
  6. Design Uncoated-Steel Thickness: 0.0358 inch (20 gauge) unless otherwise indicated.
  7. Span Condition: Triple span or more.
  8. Side Joints: Overlapped.
  9. Parapet Closure Deck: Fabricate panels conforming to SDI Publication No.28 "Specifications and Commentary for Steel Roof Deck" and the following:
  10. Galvanized Steel Sheet: ASTMA653/A653M, Structural Steel (SS), Grade 33, G90, zinc coated according to ASTMA525.
  11. Deck Profile: Type B or NR, narrow rib unless noted otherwise on drawings.
  12. Profile Depth: 11/2 inches unless noted otherwise on drawings.
  13. Design Uncoated-Steel Thickness: 0.0358 inch (20 gauge) unless otherwise indicated.
  14. Span Condition: Simple span.
  15. Side Joints: Overlapped.

2.3  FORM DECK

  1. Noncomposite Steel Form Deck: Fabricate ribbed-steel sheet noncomposite form deck panels conforming to SDI Publication No.28 "Specifications and Commentary for Noncomposite Steel Form Deck," the minimum section properties indicated, and the following:
  2. Galvanized Steel Sheet: ASTMA446, GradeE, G90 zinc coated according to ASTMA525.
  3. Profile Depth: One of the following or as noted otherwise on Drawings
  4. 1-1/2 inches, wide ribbed.
  5. 2 inches, wide ribbed.
  6. Design Uncoated-Steel Thickness: 0.0474 inch (18 gauge).
  7. Span Condition: Triple span or more.
  8. Side Joints: Overlapped or interlocking seam at Contractor's option.
  9. Composite Steel Floor Deck: Fabricate panels, with integrally embossed or raised pattern ribs and interlocking side laps, to comply with "SDI Specifications and Commentary for Composite Steel Floor Deck," in SDI Publication No.29, the minimum section properties indicated, and the following:
  10. Galvanized Steel Sheet: ASTMA653/A653M, Structural Steel (SS), Grade 33, G90 zinc coating.
  11. Profile Depth: 1-1/2 inches.
  12. Design Uncoated-Steel Thickness: 0.0474 inch (18 gage).
  13. Span Condition: Triple span or more.

2.4  ACCESSORIES

  1. General: Provide accessory materials for steel deck that comply with requirements indicated and recommendations of the steel deck manufacturer.
  2. Side Lap Fasteners: Manufacturer's standard, corrosion-resistant, hexagonal washer head; self-drilling, carbon steel screws, No.10 minimum diameter.
  3. Mechanical Fasteners: Corrosion-resistant, low-velocity, powder actuated pneumatically driven carbon-steel fasteners for attaching metal deck to structural steel. Fasteners shall have 5/16-inch- diameter head, 0.15-inch-) diameter shank and shall be 1/2 inch long.
  4. Rib Closure Strips: Manufacturer's standard vulcanized, closed-cell, synthetic rubber.
  5. Miscellaneous Roof Deck Accessories: Steel sheet, 0.0474-inch (18 gauge) thick minimum ridge and valley plates, splice plates, finish strips, and reinforcing channels, of same material as roof deck.
  6. Pour Stops and Girder Fillers: Steel sheet, of same material as deck panels, and of thickness and profile indicated.
  7. Column Closures, End Closures, Z-Closures, and Cover Plates: Steel sheet, of same material and thickness as deck panels, unless otherwise indicated.
  8. Steel Sheet Accessories: ASTMA446, G60 coating class, galvanized according to ASTMA525.
  9. Galvanizing Repair Paint: SSPC-Paint 20 or DOD-P-21035, with dry film containing a minimum of 94 percent zinc dust by weight.
  10. Cants: Fabricate cants from 1.52 mm thick (0.0598-inch-thick) (Type No. 16) metal, unless otherwise indicated, shaped, sized, and detailed as indicated.
  11. Roof Sump Pans: Flat plate steel sheet, 0.0747 inch (18 gage) thick of same material and finish as deck. For drains, cut holes in field

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1  EXAMINATION

  1. Examine supporting framing and field conditions for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance of steel deck.

3.2  PREPARATION

  1. Locate decking bundles to prevent overloading of supporting members.

3.3  INSTALLATION, GENERAL

  1. Install deck panels and accessories according to applicable specifications and commentary of SDI Publication No.28, manufacturer's recommendations, and requirements of this Section.
  2. Place deck panels on supporting framing and adjust to final position with ends accurately aligned and bearing on supporting framing before being permanently fastened. Do not stretch or contract side lap interlocks.
  3. Place deck panels flat and square and fasten to supporting framing without warp or deflection.
  4. Openings
  5. Cut and neatly fit openings for vents, piping, ductwork, and other mechanical equipment or services to the size, dimensions, and shapes necessary for proper functioning, as indicated. Make openings using saw; torching or burning is not permitted.
  6. Reinforce holes and openings 8 inches across or smaller with 0.0474 inch (Type No. 18) and holes and openings 8 inches to 12 inches across with 0.0598 inch Type No. 16 steel sheet at least 12 inches wider and longer than opening fastened to deck at corners and at a maximum of 6 inches on centers.
  7. Provide additional reinforcement and closure pieces at openings as required for strength, continuity of decking, and support of other work.
  8. Comply with AWS requirements and procedures for manual shielded metal arc welding, appearance and quality of welds, and methods used in correcting welding work.

3.4  ROOF DECK INSTALLATION

  1. Fasten roof deck panels to steel supporting members by arc spot (puddle) welds of the surface diameter indicated as follows:
  2. Weld Diameter: 5/8 inch, nominal.
  3. Weld Spacing: Weld edge ribs of panels at each support. Space welds an maximum of 12 inches apart, with a minimum of two welds per unit at each support. Space welds 6 inches along building corners over an area 10’-0 square, and at perimeters for a distance of 6 feet from exterior wall.
  4. Weld Spacing to be 8 inches on center for 3 inch Type N deck.
  5. As an alternate to welding if acceptable to the Owner, fasten roof deck panels to steel supporting members by with low-velocity air tools. Use a minimum of 2 fasteners for 12 inch deck units, 3 fasteners for 18- or 24- inch deck units, or 4 fasteners for 30- or 36- inch deck panels .
  6. Side Lap and Perimeter Edge Fastening: Fasteners spaced to provide a minimum of 4 screws per span using the following method:
  7. Mechanically fasten with self-drilling No.10 diameter or larger carbon steel screws.
  8. End Bearing: Install deck ends over supporting framing with a minimum end bearing of 1-1/2 inches, with end joints as follows:
  9. End Joints: Lapped 2 inches minimum.
  10. Miscellaneous Roof Deck Accessories
  11. Install ridge and valley plates, finish strips, cover plates, end closures, and reinforcing channels according to deck manufacturer's recommendations.
  12. Install continuous splice plates at all joints where metal deck changes direction. Fasten plates with 4.8 mm diameter (No. 10) screws at 12 inch (300 mm) spacing along both edges.
  13. Roof Sump Pans: Install over openings provided in roof decking and weld to top of deck. Space welds not more than 12 inches apart with at least one weld per corner.

3.5  FORM DECK INSTALLATION

  1. Position deck with rib down (inverted).
  2. Fasten floor deck panels to steel supporting members by arc spot (puddle) welds of the surface diameter indicated and as follows:
  3. Weld Diameter: 3/4 inch, nominal.
  4. Weld Spacing: Weld edge ribs of panels at each support. Space additional welds 12 inches apart.
  5. Side Lap and Perimeter Edge Fastening: Fasten side laps and perimeter edges of panels between supports, or at intervals not exceeding 36 inches, using one of the following methods:
  6. Mechanically fasten with self-drilling No.10 diameter or larger carbon steel screws.
  7. Engage and button-punch side laps.
  8. End Bearing: Install deck ends over supporting framing with a minimum end bearing of 2 inches, with end joints as follows:
  9. End Joints: Butted over supports.
  10. Pour Stops and Girder Fillers: Weld steel sheet pour stops and girder fillers to supporting structure according to SDI recommendations, unless otherwise indicated.
  11. Form Deck Closures: Weld steel sheet column closures and Z-closures to deck according to SDI recommendations to provide tight-fitting closures at open ends of ribs and sides of decking. Weld cover plates at changes in direction of floor deck panels, unless otherwise indicated.

3.6  FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

  1. Testing Agency: Engage a qualified independent testing agency to perform field inspections and tests and to prepare test reports.
  2. Field welds will be subject to inspection.
  3. Testing agency will report test results promptly and in writing to Contractor and Engineer.
  4. Remove and replace work that does not comply with specified requirements.
  5. Additional testing will be performed to determine compliance of corrected work with specified requirements.

3.7  REPAIRS AND PROTECTION

  1. Galvanizing Repairs: Prepare and repair damaged galvanized coatings on both surfaces with galvanized repair paint according to ASTMA780 and the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Provide final protection and maintain conditions to ensure steel decking is without damage or deterioration at time of Substantial Completion.
  3. Repair purlins, beams, and alike having weld burns by plug welding and grinding flush.
  4. Wash and clean deck prior to erection and/or after erection to Owner’s satisfaction.
