DAILY LIVESTOCK HUMANE HANDLING AUDIT: BARN, PENS AND YARDS

Audit will be performed a minimum of once per week, by a QA or Production representative.

Procedure: Conduct a tour of the pens, barn, yards and trailer unloading area. Observe all areas to determine plant compliance to Animal Handling Guidelines. Use the criteria below to record your observations. Notify the area supervisor if immediate action is needed. Document all corrective actions on this form, or complete an Animal Welfare Corrective Action Form.

Non-ambulatory animals – There is a zero tolerance for dragging sensible animals. PASS = Animals that are stunned with a captive bolt can be dragged. Sensible non-ambulatory animals must be euthanized. FAIL = Any sensible animal is dragged.

Purposeful driving of animals – PASS = Animals moved quietly, no purposeful driving of one animal over another. FAIL = Purposefully driving an animal over top of a downed animal. Note: Some animals will attempt to crawl or drive forward below another animal, do not count this as a failure.

Non-slip flooring – is required on unloading ramps, pens, alleys, chutes, and stunning areas. PASS = 3% Slipping 1% Falling. Note % Slipping or number of animals observed and number slipping to knees: Example 1/20=5%.

FAIL = Greater than 3% slipping in any area. Greater than 1% of animal is observed falling.
Pen Condition- PASS= Fencing must be in good repair and free of sharp edges that could cause bruises or injuries. Floors must drain and be free of large puddles. FAIL = Standing puddles present that could cause slipping. Serious fence damage or sharp edges visible (that has or could injury to the animals).

Pen Cleaning – Review pen cleanliness. PASS = Pens should not have manure more than ½ way up the hooves of animals held there. Animals should not be slipping or falling in the pens. Review pen cleaning documentation, if available. Documentation should indicate that pens were cleaned after each rotation (daily). FAIL= Manure present, documents incomplete, animal slipping and falling.

Pen Stocking – PASS = Enough space must be provided in holding pens so that all animals can reach water and all animals can lie down at the same time without lying on top of each other. Target approximately 75% full. FAIL = Pen fill 85% or greater and the animals can not lie down or reach water. Trampling possible or observed.

Mounting Behavior – PASS = Animals that exhibit continuous or repetitive mounting behavior moved from the pens to prevent injury to other animals. FAIL = Excessive mounting behavior is observed.

Handling – PASS = Animals in the yards are moved at a walk or trot and none fall down. FAIL = More than 25% of animals move at faster than a walk or trot.

Electric Prod Use - Prod use is minimized, with alternate tools used as the primary driving aid. (Flags, plastic canes, short tailed buggy whips, rattle paddles (preferably with rattle removed). PASS = Prod use at 25% or less over the day. FAIL, use of the prod on greater than 25% of animals.
