Daily Grammar Practice Week 1 – November 6 – 10, 2017

Day 1

Phrase: a phrase is a group of words that does not express a complete thought. It does not have both a Subject and a Verb.

Ex. Leaving the door open under the desk because of her glittering smile

Clause: a clause is a group of words that have BOTH a Subject and a Verb. It may or may not express a complete thought.

Ex. After the movie ended Gloria performed in the school play

Read each group of words, and Write P for phrase and C for clause.

Day 2

Prepositional Phrase:begins with a PREPOSITION and ends with an object. Prepositional Phrases modify words in a sentence.

Ex. I rolled down the hill. Preposition: down Object: hill Modifies: rolled (tells where)

Read each sentence. Underline the preposition phrase.

  1. We walked over the mountain.
  2. Sally and Dan will go after lunch.
  3. Ben will go home after the movie.
  4. Yes, Mrs. Burke goes to the library.
  5. I sent invitations to Mary, Helen, and Jack.
  6. I went into the store.
  7. They will go in spite of the rain.
  8. Grain crops like wheat are grown widely in the Midwest.
  9. English is used by a quarter of the people in the world.
  10. A pale, cobwebby moon shone through the trees.

Day 3

Independent Clause: an independent clause contains BOTH a Subject and a Verb and expresses a complete thought.

Ex. The students read silently. Jason runs track for his high school.

Dependent (Subordinate) Clause: a dependent clause contains BOTH a Subject and a Verb, but it is NOT a complete thought. Dependent Clauses begin with a subordinating conjunction.

Ex. While the students read silently Since Jason runs track for high school

Read each group of words, and decide if it an Independent or Dependent (Subordinate) Clause. Circle the subordinating conjunctions in each dependent clause.

Day 4

Simple Sentence: a simple sentence is made up of ONE Independent Clause.

Ex. The vocabulary quiz will be on Friday.

Compound Sentence: a compound sentence is made up of TWO independent clauses. .

The clauses can be joined in TWO ways:

  1. A comma and a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS)

Ex. Ms. Tory held Margaret’s hand, but she did not speak.

  1. A semicolon (;)

Ex. Joe made the sugar cookies; Susan decorated them.

Read each sentence. Write S for simple and C for compound.

____ 9. She broke her leg and sprained her wrist in the accident.

____ 10. He didn’t want to go to the dentist, yet he went anyway.

Day 5

Phrases and Clauses Review

Identify whether each group of words is PHRASE or CLAUSE. Circle P for Phrase or C for Clause.
