About me

Greetings and Salutations! My name is Mrs. Pollard and I will be teaching sixth grade ELA this year. This is my fourth year at Bradford, and my 15th year teaching. I live in Matthews, NC with my husband Jeremy, our son Boone, and our five crazy dogs! I am so excited to get started this year and to have the best year ever!

Daily Expectations, TArdy & iTEM dROP OFF pOLICY

  • Students are expected to be Respectful, Responsible, and Prepared daily.
  • Students will be marked tardy if they are not seated in their classroom by 8:15. Tardy students should check-in the Middle School office before reporting to class. There is an automatic afterschool detention after three tardies to school. Refer to handbook for details.
  • Parents are allowed to drop off forgotten lunches and prescription eye glasses. Athletic uniforms may also be dropped off. Students will be permitted to pick uniforms up during a break in their schedule. NO other items will be allowed to be given to the student (PE clothes, instruments, homework, binders, projects, etc.)

Homework

  • Time will be provided during the school day for students to complete their work.
  • Students will have a 28-minute study hall scheduled into their day for independent work time.
  • Homework will be factored into grades at 10%.
  • Homework cannot be used for extra credit. Bradford does not give extra credit.

Make up & Late work policy

  • Students who are absent have 3 days to turn in make-up work or the late policy will come into effect.
  • The student is responsible for requesting missing assignments. Teachers are not required to provide assignments in advance of a student’s absence—excused or unexcused.
  • Late work Policy:
    1 day late = 20% deduction from score 2-5 days late = 50% deduction from score 6 or more days late = a score of 0

  • Bradford Prep’s expectation for student behavior is based upon the following principles:
  • Students will act with courtesy, consideration, tolerance, and patience in all interactions with others both at school and during school-sponsored activities.
  • Students shall treat school property and facilities with care and respect.
  • Students shall treat the property of others with care and respect.
  • Students will follow Bradford Prep’s Honor Code and be honest in all academic and social situations.
  • Student behavior will reflect positively upon Bradford Prep.
  • Consequences for violating the policies in the Student Handbook, teacher/team standards, or rules may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Parental involvement
  • Isolation or time-out for short periods of time
  • Behavior improvement agreements (contracts)
  • Individual or small group sessions with an administrator
  • Silent Lunch
  • Detention during lunch or before/after school
  • Exclusion from extracurricular activities
  • Suspension or exclusion

Grading policy

  • The Grading Policy for 5th – 8th grade is as follows:
  • Formative Grades – 60%(may include classwork, labs etc.)
  • Summative Grades – 30% (may include tests, quizzes and projects)
  • Homework Grades – 10% (may include in-class short completion assignments)
    Grades will be posted within the week of completion except for late work, projects, written papers, and group work may take 1-2 weeks to be entered into gradebook. Please take the time to review PowerSchool, as this is where your child’s grades will be recorded.

6th grade English Language Arts Curriculium

This year we will be focusing on becoming better readers and writers. I plan to use novels and short stories to teach habits of good readers as well as the elements of fiction. I will be working closely with the social studies and science teachers to integrate these subjects with reading and writing. Weekly we will be completing vocabulary work and writing a paragraph of the week. Students will also be asked to complete reading logs this year.
