Dear Parents,

Welcome to fifth grade! My name is Dionne Schoen. I will be your child’s math and scienceteacher this school year. If your child is in my homeroom, I will also be teaching him/her social studies. I live here in Madisonville with my twelve year old daughter, Sarah. I have sixteen years teaching experience and have acquired both a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. I have taught grades one through five. My primary goal for this school year is to have students actively engaged in meaningful, fun activities. Technology, cooperative grouping, skilled-based games, and many other effective tools will be used to establish a rich, learning environment for students.

In order to provide the best educational experience possible for your child, I have attached a confidential Parent Input sheet to assist me in getting to know your child better. Please complete this form and return it to school. If you ever have a comment or concern, please feel free to contact me through notes, email , or by phoning the school office (792-0156). I will get back with you as soon as possible. Visit our class webpage, to get information about upcoming events, assignments, schedules, and reminders. Also, please read and sign the Fifth Grade and LES Handbooks. This should answer many of your questions regarding subjects, grading scale, behavior policy, classroom routines, procedures, and expectations. Communication is the key to a successful school year!

DAILY COMMUNICATION:

Students will have a blue CAMP (Communicating And Managing Paperwork) folder which will serve as parent/teacher daily communication. This folder will contain letters from the office, lunch calendars, behavior log, homework, etc. Please review the contents of this folder each day. The Behavior Log will keep you informed of your child’s weekly behavior. This log is used to determine the conduct grade for each nine weeks. Information regarding conduct and the log will be sent home on the first day of school.

TEST FOLDER:

A test folder (red) will be sent home every Friday which will include graded tests from the prior week. A sheet will be attached to the inside of the folder whichwill require a parent/guardian signature. Please return the signed folder and include all D and F papers. The following St. Tammany School Board grading scale will be used for assessments:

(A 93-100), (B 85-92), (C 75-84), (D 67-74), ( F 0-66)

HOMEWORK:

Students are encouraged to use the daily agenda sheet to copy homework assignments from the board. Homework assignments will be given Monday through Thursday. They will reinforce already taught skills and will be checked daily. Some assignments/projects will be counted as a test grade. A grading rubric will be sent home to outline all specifics for the project. Students who do not completedaily homework assignments will receive a “No Homework” comment on their Behavior Log and will be required to complete the assignment. Students will receive a homework test grade for each nine weeks. Students will begin each nine weeks with 100%. Five points will be deducted for every assignment that is not completed. Daily homework assignments will also be posted on my webpage for your convenience.

VOLUNTEERING/SUPPLY FEE:

Volunteers are always welcome for class and school functions. Many of you signed up to help volunteer at the Meet and Greet. If you did not have an opportunity to do so, send a note or email and I will forward it to our room mother. Please remember to return all of the first day papers along with the $10 Supply Fee as soon as possible. The supply fee will be used to purchase various classroom and art supplies.

I am looking forward to meeting all of you at Open House on Wednesday, September 6th. This is going to be a great year!!!

Sincerely,

Dionne Schoen
