School Council

A school council is, by definition, “a forum through which parents can contribute to the education of students in your school”. You can find that description in the 112 page handbook created by the Ministry of Education or you can simply refer to the school council at D.M. Eagle Public School. That is a definitive school council. The members of this group, which has numbered as many as 20, have a common realization, that parental involvement in education improves a student’s opportunity for success.

In the words of Principal Cathy Cincurak, “our team of…parents has been instrumental in strengthening the partnership between home and school.” Nurturing those relationships is one of the goals of D.M. Eagle’s School Improvement Plan and the school council has been leading the way. They have organized wonderful social opportunities for families, using math, the arts, movies and even ice cream to get parents’ attention. Once they have them hooked with a Picasso reproduction or a little Neapolitan, they share their passion for education and the importance of family involvement in a child’s learning. A staff member commented, “I believe the most valuable positive impact from our School Council has been their outstanding organization of school community events which welcome families to experience fellowship and a sense of support and belonging.”

D. M. Eagle’s School Council also contributes directly to student achievement by providing additional educational resources including technology, books and paying for programs such as Learning Through the Arts. Some of the money for these things comes through traditional fundraising efforts, but council also applies for and receives a number of grants each year.

The D.M. Eagle School Council is a model of efficiency and effectiveness…a perfect example of a Champion for Education.
