CV Writing Tips
The Format
- Choose a layout that is simple, clear and easy to read
- Use headings to separate out the different sections of your CV
- Spell check, spell check and spell check again. Also ask a friend or family member to proof read it as well. Spell check does not always pick of every error
- Use bullet points rather than sentences
- Do not try to make your CV look pretty. Do not try and be creative. A professional layout is best. No colour or borders. Less is more
- Do not include a photograph. They will meet you at the interview.
- Ensure dates are in the same format throughout your CV eg month year in full or shortened consistently eg Jan 2012 – Feb 2013
- Keep it short – for a school leaver we recommend a maximum of two pages
- Do not use full stops
- Complete a grammar check on your CV
- Use the same font throughout. We would recommend Arial, font size 12 for the main content and bold font size 14 for headings
- Check line spacing is consistent
The Content
- Don’t waste time with a cover sheet – list your name and contact details at the top of the first page
- You do not need to include details such as age, religion, or the names of your pets!
- Ensure the content is relevant to the role you are applying for. Tailor your CV so it is relevant to the position advertised. Always check your personal statement is appropriate to the role you are applying for
- Keep your content concise and informative. You can elaborate in the interview
- Record your work and educational history in a chronological order – most recent job first
- If you have limited experience a testimonial from a past employer or teacher can be very beneficial on your CV. Ideally it would be good to have two quotes on your CV. Makes sure to include referee’s name, title and organisation. Ask referees for permission to include their testimonial on your CV
Other Tips
- Remember to ensure your voicemail message is appropriate
- If you include an email address ensure that it is a private one and that you do check it regularly. Again make sure your email address is appropriate for job applications
- Be aware of the file name you save your CV under. Make sure it is appropriate for multiple applications
