Customary Units for Length

inch ______this segment is about an inch. It is about the length from your knuckle to knuckle.

foot - this page, from top to bottom, is a little less than 1 foot long.

1 foot (ft) = 12 inches (in)

1 yard = 3 feet

mile - when you travel by car, airplane, or train you measure the distance in miles.

1 mile (mi) = 5,280 feet (ft)

Metric Units for Length

Millimeter - a millimeter is about this long: –

1 centimeter (cm) = 10 millimeters (mm)

meter – a meter is a little longer than 3 feet

1 meter (m) = 100 centimeters (cm)

kilometer – a kilometer is about 3/5 of a mile

Customary Units for Measuring Capacity

Teaspoon – a small spoon, like one used to eat your lunch

Tablespoon – a large spoon, equal to about 3 teaspoons

1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons

Cup – the size of an ordinary cup

Pint – think of a pint of milk (Your milk at school is a half pint.)

1 pint (pt) = 2 cups (c)

Quart – think of a quart of milk

1 quart (qt) = 2 pints (pt)

Gallon – think of a large jug of milk

1 gallon (gal) = 4 quarts (qt)

Milliliter – think of a drop of water
