PRIVATE PRACTICE

Mending Path Relationship Center, Inc. (formerly Services for Relationship Violence, Inc.). I provide forensic and general consultation, educational presentations, counseling and therapy, and author materials. The focus of this practice is on forensic assessment and treatment issues pertaining to sexual offenses and domestic and relationship abuse. I also specialize in providing divorce mediation for those experiencing verbal or physical abuse, working with the abuser, victim, and family. I provided treatment for domestic batterers and sex offenders, including victims and perpetrators, as well as general relationship and marital therapy and divorce mediation. Lectured in Sweden on dating violence (4/91). (1/89 to present)

POSITIONS

Clinical Team Lead, Therapist, GEO, Florida Civil Commitment Center. Provide clinical direction and supervision for a treatment team; provide therapy groups and individual therapy to the residents (adult male sexual offenders committed as Violent Sexual Predators); provide risk assessment. Conduct intake, psychosocial and other related reports including forensic reports. (10/06 to 01/07).

Case Manager, Psychologist, Cigna Behavioral Health. Provide telephonic clinical review with mental health providers across the country. Provide crisis intervention for clients calling in. This is a full-time position. (12/04 to 09/06)

Crisis Therapist, Carver County Social Services. Provide crisis intervention at hospitals, jails, in-home, on the telephone, and on other locations as needed. Conduct assessments to determine level and type of intervention, including facilitating hospitalizations. Work closely with physicians, mental health and social service staff, and law enforcement. The hours involved evenings and nigh shift, which conflicted with my private practice. This was a full-time position. (5/04 to 07/04)

Psychologist, Counseling Services of Southern Minnesota.Provide forensic evaluations including Parenting Assessments, Custody Evaluations, Domestic Abuse Assessments, and Sex Offenders Assessments; also provide individual and family therapy. This is a part-time position. (6/01 to 11/01)

Civil Commitment Review Coordinator, Forensic Psychologist (Psychologist III), Minnesota Department of Corrections. Responsible for assessing and referring sex offenders for civil commitment per the Sexually Dangerous Person and Sexual Psychopathic Personality Statutes; provide expert testimony in court; assess sex offenders who violate conditions of their parole; conduct assessments on sex offenders who enter the Minnesota correctional facilities when necessary and provide a written report which includes recommendations for treatment programming, degree of denial, and degree of dangerousness; conduct Abel Assessment to assess sexual interest and arousal; conduct ongoing research; and provide training to sex offender treatment staff. Psychologist, Alpha Services, Inc., Minneapolis, Minnesota. Provide individual, group, couples and marital therapy for adult male sex offenders. Responsible for case management, evaluation, and therapy. This was a full-time position. (2/94 to 12/95)

Psychologist, Project Pathfinder, St. Paul, Minnesota. Provide individual, group, and couples therapy for sexual offenders. Facilitate three therapy groups, a recalcitrant group, and a boundaries group (for individuals who committed sexual harassment). Also provide pre-sentencing assessments for the courts. This was a full-time position. (7/91 to 12/93)

Have been asked to consult with the offices of three Minnesota Governors on issues related to sexual predators and civil commitment.

TASK FORCES/STUDY GROUPS

Civil Commitment Study Group. This group was established per legislative mandate to examine issues involving sexual offenders who are committed as Sexually Dangerous Persons and/or Sexual Psychopathic Personalities, and to make recommendations. This group examined issues including the current system of treatment, commitment and confinement of these individuals; financial costs associated with the current system; the advantages and disadvantages of alternatives to the current system, including indeterminate sentencing and changes to the patterned sex offender law; how other states have responded to these individuals; and confidentiality issues pertaining to statements made by sex offenders while in treatment. This group met on twelve occasions from May to October 1998.

EXPERT TESTIMONY

Provided expert testimony concerning sex offenders, including civil commitment hearings the states of Minnesota, Washington and Florida.

RESEARCH

Conducted a comparison of the Abel Screen/Assessment and the Plethysmograph. This research began in 1997 and concluded in 1999. Alan Listiak, Ph.D., LICSW is the co-author. Minnesota Department of Corrections. Data has been presented at conferences and published as a chapter in an edited book (mentioned above).

Examined the types of force (physical and psychological) sex offenders utilized in the commission of their sex offenses. Data has been presented at numerous conferences and was published in two journals as well as a chapter in an edited book (mentioned above).
