  1. Contribution to the Nation:
  1. Prof Oworu initiated the collection of sugarcane germplasm, which served as the source materials for the improvement of sugarcane in Nigeria after the successful collection from the islands of Trinidad and Tobago and Babados in the West Indies for further hybridization and progenies are being encouraged for spreading at Sugar Estates in Nigeria.
  2. Prof Oworu initiated and proposed the sugarcane breeding programme for the Nigerian sugar industry. This programme was proposed with others during a post doctoral study at the Hawaiian Sugar Planters’ AssociationExperiment Station and the University of Hawaii in Honolulu USA in 1980. The programme was published in the prestigious International Sugar Journal and is a veritable programme for generating new sugarcane varieties for the Nigerian ecosystems, industry and the world.
  3. Some herbicides used alone or in combination and the appropriate rates of application were indentified by Prof. Oworu to control weeds at the Bacita Sugar Estate and other Sugar Estates and Sugarcane Plantations in Nigeria.
  4. Prof. Oworu initiated the tissue culture techniques and protoplast fusion to improve productivity in sugarcane.
  5. Prof. Oworu initiated the study of 14C fixation and translocation to confirm the amount of sugar stored by different clones of sugarcane.
  6. Prof Oworu initiated the research on the uptake of sugar from sugar solution by slices of the storage tissue of different sugarcane varieties, demonstrating as initial passive uptake against a concentration gradient, which occurred for over 36hrs of the assay.
  7. He also demonstrated that the anatomy of the storage tissue of different varieties of sugarcane varies with their sugar uptake in vitro.
