1)Subgroup members discussed the legal interpretation of SB 394 and implementation process for standards
a)Eddy Albeser from the Department of Education announced to subgroup members that he has a received word from legal counsel has agreed the wording of SB 394 allows for the task force to submit standards to the Department of rather than through the Academic Standards Council. Through this process, standards submitted will be issued as an addendum mandated standards
b)Subgroup members re-affirmed that these health standards are not part of the sexual education standards. There are conflicts between SB 394 and Nevada’s sex ed statute such as the opt-in/out system and who is qualified to teach these standards.
c)Eddy Albeser also added that since the addendums to the standards will be implemented through the support of his office (The Safe and Respectful Learning Environment) the standards will be able to carry more weight and that complying with these standards will be more easily enforced throughout the school districts through the help of this office.
2)Next Steps
a)Subgroup Members agreed to start working on the curriculum addendum recommendations for eventual presentation to the Board of Education for approval.
b)Subgroup members decided that it would be helpful to set up a series of meeting with school district employees, teachers, and other curriculum experts to review our curriculum recommendations and receive feedback.
c)Subgroup members created a timeline for implementing their recommended standards.
i)Curriculum Recommendations will be presented to the Board of Education at one of their meetings. Some upcoming meeting dates for the Board include June 15th, June 21st, and July 17th. However, subgroup members agreed that we take the time to develop exceptional standards as opposed to rushing to finish by these meetings. The timeline will be revisited at the next Curriculum Standards Subgroup Meeting.
