Year3 St Georges Autumn 1 2015

Literacy
During this half term, Year 3 will look at the features of non-chronological reports and create one on rainforests. Following this they will explore the genre of mystery stories before planning and writing their own. Furthermore, children will learn the concept of formal and informal letter writing using the test ‘Jack and the baked beanstalk’.
In grammar lessons, the children will look at the use of commas and clauses, continue to look at adverbs of manner to describe action,and look at writing in the past and present tense.
Handwriting practise will continue to take place each week, with an emphasis on using the cursive script to join all letters.
Spellings will come home every Tuesday for a test on the following Monday. Literacy homework will come home on Tuesday, linked to our grammar lessons, or reading comprehension. Homework is due in on a Monday.
We will continue to teach reading, with an emphasis on comprehension skills, through our daily reciprocal reading sessions. The children are encouraged to discuss, in increasing detail, what they have read. / Numeracy
This half term Year 3 will:
  • Learn place value of 2 and 3-digit numbers and partition numbers into Hundreds, Tens and Units.
  • Practise addition and subtraction facts up to 3 digits, including both written and mental strategies.
  • Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3 and 4 multiplication tables.
  • Children will continue to consolidate their knowledge and understanding of 2D and 3D shapes and will measure, and compare quantities of mass using kilograms and grams.
Throughout the Autumn term, the children will begin to solve one and two step word problems involving money and length, explaining their reasoning.
Each week, children willcontinue to practise weekly mental maths tests and carry out maths investigations to improve problem solving skills.
Maths homework will come home on Fridays for completion by the next Thursday.
Creative Curriculum: The Rainforest
Year 3 will:
  • Locate rainforests around the world
  • Describe the layers of the rainforest
  • Find out about the effects of deforestation on the ecosystem
  • Compare the lifestyle of rainforest tribes with their own lifestyles
  • Investigate plants and conditions for growth
  • Design and make props and costumes for the Year 3 Production
  • Understand how emails are used and sent, and increase awareness of staying safe online.
