Be Joyful in Hope. Soyez joyeux dans l'espoir.

Lent is the Christian season of preparation before Easter. This year the season will be observed beginning Ash Wednesday, February 14th and ending Easter Sunday, April 1st.

The Lenten season is a time when many Christians observe a period offasting, repentance, moderation, self-denial and spiritual discipline. The purpose is to set aside time for reflection onJesus Christ- his suffering and his sacrifice, his life, death, burial, and resurrection.

During the six weeks of self-examination and reflection, Christians who observe Lent typically make a commitment to fast, or to give up something—a habit, such as smoking, watching TV, inappropriate language, or a food or drink, such as sweets, chocolate or coffee.

Some Christians also take on a Lenten discipline, such as reading the Bible and spending more time in prayer to draw nearer to God.

Others spend more time in service for others. Volunteer more often. Take on a project as a family.

Strict observers do not eat meat on Fridays, having fish instead. The goal is to strengthen the faith and spiritual disciplines of the observerand develop a closer relationship with God.

May your Lenten journey lead you to a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.

St. Valentine’s Day/Ash Wednesday

This year, we are in the unique situation where Ash Wednesday falls on February 14th.

Since Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and special penance, we are moving Valentine’s Day celebrations or activities in our schools and classrooms to Tuesday, February 13th. This would include sharing of Valentine’s cards/treats or any Valentine’s Spirit Day activities such as dressing in Red, White, and Pink, and so on. Tuesday, February 13th is also Mardi Gras, so we are taking advantage of that and making the day a Mardi Gras / Valentine’s Day. Even though students have been asked to wear their St. Margaret t-shirt (see information below), we are also encouraging pink, red , white etc. in any way that they would like.

Shifting the activities will give our students the opportunity to still experience Valentine’s activities in school, while keeping the focus of the day on February 14th on Ash Wednesday and the special importance that day holds.

Lastly, since Mardi Gras is a day of enjoyment and fun, we have decided to hold our MISSION FAIR during the afternoon of the 13th! Activities will be similar to those in previous years. Students are invited to bring $5 IN A ZIPLOCK BAG WITH THEIR NAME ON IT during the week of Feb. 5th-9th. Mme Hebert will collect the money and replace it with the tickets needed for the afternoon’s activities. As in previous years, family members are more than welcome to attend. You will be able to purchase tickets from Mme Hebert on the 13th. If you have any questions, please contact Mme Phipps.

Our favorite fairy-tale characters have their world turned upside down as they get a fresh taste of reality! When a portal is opened to another world, Cinderella’s stepsisters take the leap and find themselves in a very real high school. While they seem to fit in perfectly in this world where mean girls are cool, crossing over into reality has serious consequences for the fantasy world they left behind. The Woodsman, who dreams of being more than just an incidental character without even a name, sets out to be the hero who brings them home. The Woodsman seeks help from high school student Danica, a hard-core realist who never believed in fairy tales. She’s running for class president, but her speeches are full of gloom and doom.Meanwhile, gloom and doom is becoming reality for our fairy-tale characters! Without the Woodsman, Little Red is attacked by the wolf and Sleeping Beauty keeps pricking her finger while chopping her own firewood! As harsh reality seeps into the fairy tales, the characters are forced to break free of their patterns and learn to take charge of their own destiny. Best of all, the classic princesses discover they can be their own heroes, and Danica realizes that sometimes you have to take a leap of faith! You’ll love this complex, rich tapestry of enchanted fun woven with a poignant, meaningful thread about what it means to be alive and in control of your own destiny.
