Brian Gothong Tan (22 years old)

Brian was awarded a grant under the NAC New Media Arts Fund scheme for his first solo exhibition Heavenly Cakes and Sentimental Flowers at the Singapore Art Museum in June 2003. He was also a recipient of the Young Designers’ Award for Multimedia in both 1999 and 2000. A freelance artist with a Diploma in Digital Media Design, Brian’s multimedia works have been featured by various arts groups such as Action Theatre (for The Optic Trilogy) and The Necessary Stage (for BOTE: The Beginning of the End and godeatgod), as well as for productions such as Causeway and Mammon Inc. during the Singapore Arts Festival. He was nominated for ‘Best Set Design’ in the DBS Life! Theatre Awards this year.

Her outstanding role in The Tempest by 3.14 Company (Dramaplus) won her a nomination as Best Supporting Actress in the DBS-Life! Theatre Awards 2002. Her proposed course of studies towards a Bachelor of Dramatic Art (Acting) at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts in Australia will be her first degree in theatre.

Audrey’s most recent stint was working with The Esplanade Co. Ltd on contract as its Production Coordinator. Since September 2002, Audrey was involved in The Esplanade’s numerous shows for the Opening Festival, as well as for its Indian Festival, Malay Festival and Music Box 2003. Prior to this, Audrey has also worked with top local theatre companies like The Necessary Stage (TNS) and TheatreWorks in the areas of Production and Stage Management for their key productions. Among her numerous contributions, Audrey’s most notable achievement with these companies was being appointed Production Manager for TNS’ production, One Hundred years in Waiting for Singapore Festival of Arts 2001, and as a Production Assistantin TheatreWorks’ Desdemona productions for the Singapore Arts Festival 2000 and the Telstra Adelaide Festival 2000, Australia. In addition, Audrey also managed TNS’ M1 Youth Connectionproductions in 2001 & 2002 like Sex Education Party, Dido and Aeneas, Macbeth told by the weird sisters by Zen Zen Zo (Australia).

2003 CHEN CHONG SWEE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

Margaret Tan Ai Hua (33 years old)

Course: Masters of Art (Interactive Media) at the Goldsmiths University of London, 1 year Commencing in Sep 2003

Margaret is a practising artist working with a wide range if media. She was the recipient of the Outstanding Achievement Award (RMIT) in her Bachelor of Fine Arts Programme and became one of the first Artist-in-Residence with the Cyberarts and Cyberculture Initiative under the University Scholars Programme of National University of Singapore. Working from a feminist perspective, Margaret is interested in the intersections of body with space, technology and culture, in particular with issues of embodiment and identity. Margaret’s works have been presented in notable events like the International Symposium of Electronic Art (ISEA 2002) held in Nagoya, Japan and currently in an international festival called “From My Fingers: Living in the Technological Age”, organised by the Kaoshiung Museum of Fine Art and Women Art Association of Taiwan, Taipei. She has also been invited as a panelist at the very Cyberfeminist International in Hamburg and as a presenter in Version>03, an annual festival of digital media arts presented by the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) and Select Media in Chicago. Margaret was also recently awarded a Honorary Mention for her participating work, Smart Apron, in the "Digital Pluralism - UNESCO Digital Arts Award 2003 at IAMAS".

2003 GIFTED YOUNG MUSICIANS’ BURSARY

Clare Yeo will be pursuing her music education in piano at the Pre-College Division of The Juilliard School, USA from September 2003 onwards.
