Sept. 30, 2016

Current Events:On Wednesday morning, our 1st Grade team participated in County wide training relating to STEAM instruction in our classroom and Mrs. Brooks was our substitute teacher for the morning. It’s youth weekend at the State Fair of Virginia this weekend. Many children from Augusta County will be showing sheep, pigs, goats, or cattle this weekend at the State Fair of Virginia in Doswell. This would be a great family field trip.

Language Arts: We’ve practiced lower case p, q, z, v, and x in Handwriting. Plus, we have been learning about when to use a question mark at the end of a sentence. Learning that sentences which ask location, date, time, names, directions, or factshelps us to know that the end mark needs to be a question mark, not a period. Hopefully they will apply their understanding to their writing opportunities!

Math: Working with strategies to relate addition facts to subtraction facts and learning what equal means in numbers and equations, has been the focus of our activities this week. Some of the children are beginning to make the connection of the related addition bond for the subtraction bonds that we are creating. Yeah!!!

Science: Learning about the interactions of solids and liquids was the focus of our changes experiment this week. Ask your child to tell you the difference between a solid and a liquid.

Social Studies:With Ms. O’Connor, the children are beginning a unit of study on Christopher Columbus. This is SOL 1.3, discussing the lives of person associated with Columbus Day.
