Current Events: It sounded like everyone had a great weekend and had lots of candy to sort and eat! Thanks to Ms. Hiner for being my substitute on Thursday morning, when all 1st Grade teachers attended Professional Development at Central Office. Also, I appreciate that so many of our students got to go along and see the electronic voting ballot that is used for our local and state elections this year.

Social Studies: On Wednesday, we read about the President and the Governor’s jobs and how we elect our country’s leaders. We read about how a ballot is used for voting. Then we held a class mock election, where the children used a ballot to vote for their favorite storybook characters—Clifford vs. Curious George. It was a very close race-- with our votes ending in a tie! Betsy Ross is another famous American that we have read about this week and compared her flag to our current American Flag, and we completed a Venn diagram comparing the 2 flags.

Math: We have been practicing using strategies to add and subtract related facts faster. Using dominoes, the children found and wrote doubles facts. When we wrote the facts down, they realized the sums were a skip count by 2’s pattern. The children wrote to 100 and higher for me to check their progress, which has greatly improved!! Thanks for your help in this skill. Hopefully, counting to 100 in 1 minute will show similar progress!

Science: We are beginning a study of changes and started looking at the different kinds of matter this week.

Language Arts: This week we have practiced the strokes for learned uppercase O, C, Q, and S. The children did a free write about their weekend activities while I met with each child, and we edited their pumpkin paragraphs.
