Culminating Project: Literacy Instruction Wiki

Create a Literacy Instruction Wiki. This wiki will serve as a “living” resource manual for you to reference and use in your current or future classroom. The materials you incorporate in this wiki can be updated with additional materials and information as time passes to keep it current and relevant.

Note:Refer to Workshop 2 for instructions on how to create a free wiki account.

CompleteParts 1 through 6 below.Each part will be a separate page on your wiki. When completed, submit the link for your wiki to the Assignment Files tab.

Part 1: Personal Belief System and Reading Models

Upload your Reading Belief System Philosophy Paper from Workshop 1.

Create and insert a visual or graphic organizer comparing each of the three models of reading: bottom-up, top-down, and interactive. Include links or references for any resources used.

Part 2: The Early Years of Literacy Development

Create and insert a diagram or other visual showing the stages of reading development from birth through preschool. Include links or references for any resources used.

Draw a model of a literate classroom environment. This model can be patterned after your own current classroom and grade level or after a classroom you would like to have in the future. Include details for all parts of the room – ceiling, floor, and walls. Choose a presentation tool from the Technology Resource Library (e.g., Glogster or Piktochart) or another presentation tool as approved by your instructor.

Note: To access available tools, select Presentation Tools from the Web Tools drop-down menu in the Technology Resource Library.

Provide a description of two to threeteaching strategies that target each of the following reading components:

  • Concepts of print
  • Phonological awareness
  • Phonemic awareness
  • Phonics

Note: You should have a total of eight to twelve strategies total (two to three for each component listed above).

Include links or references for any resources used.

Part 3: Reading Strategies, Interventions, and Instructional Approaches

Provide a description of two to three strategies for developing each of the following reading skills:

  • Oral and silent reading fluency
  • Reading comprehension
  • Vocabulary knowledge
  • Reading content area texts

Note: You should have eight to twelve strategies total (two to three for each skill listed above).

Include links or references for any resource used.

Part 4: Reading-Writing Connection and Technology

Create a graphic organizer withfour activities for incorporating writing into your everyday curriculum. Branch off a brief explanation of each activity, along with a description of the setting in which it might be used.

Research and incorporatefour technology tools you can use in your classroom to enhance reading and writing instruction. Include a brief description for each tool, and how you would use the tool for instruction.Be sure to cite theweb link for each tool for future reference.

Part 5: Reading Assessments

Upload the Reading Assessment Brochure you createdin Workshop 3.

Complete the chart below. Describe the purpose of each informal assessment, the type of setting you would implement it in (e.g., whole group, one-on-one, or small group), and include two web link resources for each assessment that provide additional information, support, and/or printables for that assessment.

Part 6: Reflection
