Welcome back to a wonderful new school year filled with new experiences, new ideas, new challenges, and new goals. The students bring their new backpacks and new notebooks, while teachers bring in new teaching ideas and new bulletin boards. With all of this “new”ness it is refreshing as well because students come to us with a renewed attitude to do their best and an eagerness to enter the classroom again (at least I like to think so!). As mathematics educators we have the opportunity to engage all of our students in wonderful mathematical experiences. It is an exciting time to be teaching mathematics! We have exemplary resources

available and a supportive network of outstanding colleagues in mathematics education.

In this issue of the CTCTM newsletter take note of the news and greetings that follow and put October 7th on your calendar so that you can be a part of our fall meeting. At this meeting you will get new information and ideas on teaching mathematics as well as have the opportunity to vote on requesting to become an affiliated group with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Your officers have been busily at work to get things in order for this step. Also see the information about supporting Story Book Christmas. How awesome it would be to have books in the hands of our area students that support their learning of

mathematics as well as reading!

Oh! Be sure to mark March 5 on your calendar for the Spring mini-conference that will be held at the Region XII Service Center again this year. I am sure you have a great idea to share and also know of colleagues that could share their expertise—so fill out the Speaker proposal form enclosed and send it in

soon!

Again, welcome back to a new school year! See you in October!

______Other News and Greetings______

From the “Past-Pres”: Hello to each andevery one of our CTCTM members and their colleagues. I want to include your colleagues in this "Fall Welcome Back" note for a very special reason. This year I hope to call upon many of the schools that do not have any of their teachers that are CTCTM members. It is my hope that this will help to get the word out to those school districts---many of which are very small districts and others are parochial or private schools---that this organization is definitely worthjoining and participating in. This brings me to you as members of CTCTM and a special requestI pose to you. I am asking each of you to reach out to colleagues in your own building and others that you know inother districts or schools and tell them about CTCTM, its conferences, and how it has helped you to bring new ideas into your mathematics classroom. CTCTM has had such a wonderful response from all of you these past years as we have grown and developed our request to become part of NCTM! Wouldn't it be grand if we can significantly increase our membership this school term? So, please join me in this effort and all of us willbenefit from it. Have a wonderful new year. I look forward to seeing many of you in October and ALL of youat the Spring Conference.

VP Notes: Welcome back to school! This message decorates my classroom once again as I begin my 30th year of teaching. As I welcomed each new child through my doorway, I could see the excitement and apprehension in their faces. What new understandings would occur in this classroom? I'm sure that "fresh start" feeling is in all of our minds. It is quite a challenge to make learning exciting. Teachers are always looking for that new idea to improve the opportunities for students to be successful. In the past few years, I have tried to incorporate more hands-on explorations in mathematics. Emphasis on problem solving strategies givesstudents the tools they need to try to reason through difficult problems. Students are more confident and successful. It's exciting to watch them work. I hope your newschool year is exciting and full of success for you and yourstudents.

Virtual Manipulatives: The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics sponsors a great web site that allows access to multiple virtual manipulative sites called Illuminations (http://illuminations.nctm.org/swr/index.asp). By choosing the content or process standard along with the grade band, a list of corresponding virtual manipulative sites appears. With each site there is an explanation of its capabilities and information regarding system requirements.
