Public Speaking Agenda: Week of October 1 through 5

Monday, 10/1 By the end of week, you will be able to identify and describe the essential elements of any essay, discuss the importance of audience analysis, describe “style” in a few simple ways and discuss six important elements of voice. You will apply your knowledge of these topics to the analysis and evaluation of your own writing and your peers’ in an attempt to improve your writing and assist your classmates in improving theirs.

Do Now #5: Due upon completion of response. Listen carefully to the first five minutes of the following speech. Try to take some notes on scrap paper as you listen. For your response, all you need to do for now is briefly state what the speech seems to be about and tell me any phrases or speech habits that stood out to you—and WHY they stood out. (#55)

Work period: Essay intro. speed date and ranking

Continue “Rhetoric Vocabulary” if time with “tautology” and parallelism.”

Tuesday, 10/2

Do Now #1: Last set due. New set/new heading. (Remember: use a complete heading on the first page, put each day’s date IN the left-hand margin, and leave in section one of your ring binder until the fifth entry is completed.) (#64)

Work period: Essay intro. analysis and begin essay development—what are the essential elements of an essay? (See handouts on my web site.)

Begin analysis of student paragraphs using focus questions and handouts.

  1. What are the specific elements of this paragraph that you enjoyed?
  2. Describe the audience to whom you feel this essay would appeal.
  3. What do you think the “thesis statement” of this essay is (or is going to be)?
  4. Which organizational pattern do you feel will work best for this essay?
  5. How would you describe this writer’s voice?
  6. How would you describe this writer’s style?

Wednesday, 10/3

Do Now #2: Last set overdue. (#53)

Work period: Finish the essential elements of an essay and define/describe the “voices” from the top rated essay intros. How were they created? How do you want your voice to come across? How can you create this voice? Begin developing your essay.

Thursday, 10/4

Do Now #3: (#52)

Work period: Continue working on essays. First draft due next Wednesday for workshopping.

Friday, 10/5

Do Now #4: Due Thursday upon the completion of the fifth entry. (#48)
