CSSIW Self-Assessment of Service Statement (SASS) 2016

CSSIW Self-assessment of service statement (SASS) 2016

Childcare and play providers are required to complete a self-assessment; access to your on-line SASS will be available from 11th July 2016.

Childcare and play providers are required to complete a self-assessment and an annual review of the quality of care at their service. This information tells CSSIW about your service and the system you have for monitoring, reviewing and improving the quality of care given to children, and is used to inform their inspection of your service.

The SASS will be in two parts and available to complete online:

Part one – annual data collection. This will be sent to child minders and day care providers in early July and must be returned to CSSIW by 17th August 2016.

Part two - includes the self-evaluation of your review of quality care. This will be sent to child minders and day care providers for completion in the autumn.

How CSSIW will use information from the SASS

The inspector will use this information to:

·  plan for inspection;

·  influence what aspects of your service to prioritise and inspect;

·  inform the number of inspectors they might send to inspect your service;

·  as evidence when they make judgments (and ratings) about your service; and

·  confirm that your registration details are current and correct.

Part two of the SASS will provide evidence of the quality of your provision, detailing the main strengths and areas for improvement that you have identified. You must also tell CSSIW how you use self-reflection as part of your commitment to continuous improvement, including the views of the children, parents or carers and other professionals who work with you, including your staff and any volunteers.

During your inspection, the inspector will consider carefully how you evaluate the service you offer children and how compatible your views are with the judgements (and ratings) they make.

CSSIW may also consider your SASS if they receive any information about your provision that raises concerns. It will help them to decide if your inspection needs to be brought forward or prioritised.

When is the deadline?

The SASS (part one) must be completed and submitted by 17th August, 2016.

Some sections of this SASS must be completed with information collected during the week of:

·  11th to 15th July for term time childcare providers or

·  1st to 5th August for holiday childcare providers only

We know that some services may not be operating over the summer, but you must still complete the SASS and return it to CSSIW by 17th August 2016.

Before you start

You must have a CSSIW Online account. If you are a child minder who applied to vary your numbers online, you may already have an account. If you have forgotten your password click ‘forgotten password’ on the CSSIW Online sign in page to reset your password.

If you have never used CSSIW Online, you must create a CSSIW Online account (External link) and follow the instructions on screen.

Childcare providers must have an individual nominated to complete and submit the SASS on behalf of that service. This will either be a Registered Person or Responsible Individual at your service. If you have not yet identified a lead person, then you must contact CSSIW with your nominee as a priority. If you are the only Registered Person for the service or the nominated individual you must complete and submit the SASS.

CSSIW have developed storyboards as a guide to help you access your SASS online. (Please see email attachments).

Before you start the SASS, please ensure that you have to hand updated information (see SASS checklist appendix 1 below).

SASS online can be accessed via tablets, mobile phones and other devices and is not limited to PCs.

Can I use the SASS to notify changes to my service?

SASS does not replace the need to notify CSSIW or submit changes. All notifications and variations should be submitted through the normal process.
