Course Description

This course is an overview of computers and information processing. Students will survey word processing, spreadsheets, communications and database applications, as well as hardware components, files, programming languages and operating systems. Microsoft Office 2013 and Windows 7 will be used.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

•Recognize the importance of computers in today’s world.

•Describe the components of the computer and their uses.

•Discuss software needed for business, such as, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database programs.

•Distinguish between applications and operating system programs.

•Identify the functions of an operating system and utility programs.
Navigate the Internet to search for information and upload and download files.

•Critique the societal impact of computers with issues concerning ethics and professionalism, privacy, autonomy, free speech, and ethics.

  • There will be5 quizzes, over chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 totaling150 points(18% of your final grade)

  • There will be 12 Projects (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) each 30 points, totaling 360 points (42% of your final grade)

Quizzes & Exam:

  • All the questions on all the quizzes are from thequestions listed at the end of each chapter under “Checkpoint” section. For Example, the questions for our first quiz are all listed on pages 44 and 45.Therefore, review and practicein advancebefore taking each quiz.
  • I will only question you on T/F, Multiple Choice and Matching section.
  • Review the Checkpoints for each chapter before taking the quiz.
  • All quizzes are due at the end of the allotted time. There will be no makeup quizzes!
  • There is only one exam scheduled, which covers chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
  • There will be no make-up tests/quizzes/exams for any reason(s).

Projects:

  • There will be12 projectsform the Office 2013 section of your book, each worth 30 points, Consisting ofone File management project, 4 Word 2013 Projects, 3 Excel 2013 Projects,and 4 PowerPoint 2013 projects.
  • The due date of each project is listed under the Assignments, and Calendar sections
  • You can also view the Graded Activities page under the Modules. It will provide detailed description of eachproject and it's due dates.
  • All lab assignments will be saved and uploaded to Canvas for grading. Your assignment willbe saved under your Lastname_firstname_Project#( (For Example: for my first project. I will call itHerrington_Shirin_Project1)

Rules and Policies

  • Don’t wait until the last minutes to complete your work. Canvas is an online program, therefore technical difficulties are inevitable, so plan accordingly.
  • Points will be deducted from any homework that is improperly/late submitted.
  • Interaction with the instructor and fellow students is an integral part of the learning process. You are allowed to work with a lab partner on the lab assignments, but all work turned in must be your own. If identical assignments are turned in, all participants will receive a zero (0) for that assignment and a Notice of Charges will be filed with Student Services

Drop Policy

It is your responsibility as a student to withdraw from this class if you do not intend to complete it. Students should not expect faculty to initiate withdrawal procedures for them. You can drop a class in person, by telephone, or by internet ‐‐ please contact the Admissions Office for more information.
