Crocodile Stitch Towel Hanger

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn and a size H crochet hook. 1 ring from a Gatorade carrier 8 pack (I cut these apart and trim off the edges.), a pretty button the same size as your opening in the first scale, a needle and thread, and scissors

Stitches used:

Ch-chain, slst-slip stitch, sc- single crochet, dc- double crochet, hdc- half double crochet,

Special stitches: Scale stitch or crocodile stitch. A 2 step process of 2 rows the 1st row is of a dc,ch1, dc or V- stitch and then the 2nd row consists of : 5 dc, ch1, 5 dc over the post of the v- stitch foundation you just made. You will have 5 dc working down the 1st post and a ch 1, then 5 dc working up the 2nd dc (post) of the V stitch.

Crossed half double crochet: Skip next stitch, hdc, in next stitch, hdc in skipped stitch, crossed hdc complete.

Pattern:With H hook and worsted weight yarn, chain 5,dc in the 5thch from hook. V-st made. Ch 1 turn work to the side, working down the post of the dc just made do 5 dc, ch 1 turn work and work up the scale completing the 2nd 5 dc around the thech that counts as the first dc. Ist scale complete. You just completed row one and two.

Row 3 (increase row)Ch 4, Dc in the top front loop and side of the last dc made. It looks

like this:

The second picture is the finished v stitch increase.

V stitch in the center space of the next scale (dc, ch1, dc), V stitch in the top of last dc of scale. Ch 1 and turn. You should a have 3 v sts.

Row 4 Scale stitch in the 1st v st, slip stitch in the chain one of next v st (not in the space in the ch ) , ch 1, and scale stich in the last v st. 2 scales.

The body of the hanger has 6 rows of scales. You now have two rows of scales. Ch3, and turn.

Row 5ch 3 counts as dc, v st in center of 1stscale,V s t in slip stitch of ch1, V st in next scale,dc in last dc of scale stitch on previous row. You now have a dc, 3 v sts, dc.

Row 6 ch 1, slip st to the 1st post of center v stitch, ch 1 and scale in the center v st. slip stitch to end with last slip stitch in the top of turning chain. Chain 3 and turn. One scale

Row 7 Vst in the slst, in ch space of previous row, v st in the center of next scale, v st in the ch 1 space, , slst,, dc in last stitch.3 v sts, 2 dc (it looks like this) Chain 1 and turn.

Row 8 repeat row 4, slip stitch in the top of last dc, (2 scales),ch 3 and turn.

Row 9 repeat row5, dc in last dc of previous row.

Row 10 repeat row 6 (1 scale)

Row 11 repeat row 7

Row12 repeat row 8 ( 2 scales )(6 rows of scales complete.)

Row 13 sc in top of each scale by making 2 sc on each side of center top and one in the center space, sc in end st, sc in slip stitches making a total of 11 stitches across. Ch 2 and turn.

Row 14 Hdc in 2nd space, hdc in same space as turning ch.* Skip next space, hdc in next space, hdc in skipped space* repeat across ,hdc in last stitch. Ch 2 turn. Repeat row 14 until you have 6 rows of crossed hdcch 2 and turn.

Attaching the ring- Holding the yarn in back of the ring, hdc in 1st stitch of next row and around the ring. Work hdc’s to end of row and then hdc around ring enough times to completely cover the ring. Do not do too many, no overlapping. Slip stich to 1sthdc. And fasten off. Weave in ends
