Critique Room/Hallway Use Information, Policy and Etiquette
The critique rooms are used for a variety of events including, class critiques, graduate student committee meetings, seminar classes and visiting artist lectures. Priority for use of the critique rooms is as follows: Craft Department Faculty, Graduate Students, and then Undergraduate Students. It is the responsibility of all studentstaking credits with the craft department(graduate and undergraduate) to fully understand etiquette and policies pertaining to common use areas. The Department Studio Manager, Jason Hackett, will oversee all student use of our department’s common areas. His office is located in the Wood Area in room 213b.
Critique Room use is a privilege and these rooms should be treated with the utmost care. After use of a critique room, it is your responsibility to return the area in which you used to good or better condition than it was already in. Walls where lectures are projected should to be repaired with extra care. Any student who cannot adhere to the policies and etiquette, may lose the privilege of using the critique rooms.
Paint and painting supplies are supplied by the Craft Department for your use in order to repair walls and pedestals. These supplies can be found on the paint cart, which is kept in the closet between the rooms 231 and 233 near the ceramics area of the floor (it is often in one of the critique rooms or nearby in the hallway).
Clean up etiquette and individual responsibilities:
- Patch holes with joint compound
- Sand patched areas
- Paint walls/pedestals
- Sweep/vacuum up any dust or debris
- Put excess paint back into paint bucket
- Thoroughly clean out paint tray, roller pad and brushes with soap and water
- Remove personal items from rooms
- Return pedestals to pedestal closet
- Restack chairs and fold up any tables used
- Make sure paint and joint compound are closed tightly
- Return supply cart to closet and return closet
Additional policies for critique rooms and hallway walls:
- Do not draw or paint on critique room walls or hallway walls without pre-approval from Jason (some materials will not be permitted for drawing or painting, and you must have on your person the Red White and blue Kilz paint to cover up what you will be putting on the wall when you meet with Jason).
- If you want to do something unusual to any wall in the Craft Department speak the Jason first to receive approval.
- Under no circumstance may any floor be altered.
- Do not make a hole in any wall larger than 3/8 inch in diameter.
- Do not hang anything from track lights. (fire hazard)
- Do not hang anything from the sprinkler pipes. (fire hazard)
- Do not change light bulbs.
- The rooms need to remain clean and free of any personal items left behind. Any itemsleft behind will first be considered lost and will be placed in the hallway for 1 or 2 days. After this they will be considered unwanted and placed on the loading dock behind the building.
- Never hang anything on the mustard yellow portion of the hallway.
- All hallway walls are to be treated with the same respect as the critique room walls
- Do not block any exit pathways (fire hazard)
- Do not store your artwork in the hallway (fire hazard)
